Eva Le Queen on being a drag performer: “In simple terms, ang lagi kong sinasabi, drag, we sell a fantasy."

Filipino drag queen Eva Le Queen wanted to clarify the misconceptions about drag, saying that it's not a form of gender expression but more of an art form.

On the recent Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast episode, Eva shared her analogy of what a drag queen, or anyone else who joins drag, is.

She explained, “Para lang kami ding painters or writers or para kaming nagsusulat ng musika or nagsusulat ng tula. It's just na kung ano yung nabuong personality, ano yung performance na nabuo, yun yung art form."

Eva admitted that there have been a lot of misunderstandings about drag performers. According to her, people would assume that those who join drag are transexuals or want to cross-dress. The drag queen reiterated that drag is a form of artistic expression and not gender expression.

“Kumbaga, sa normal na buhay ko hindi naman ako nagbibihis ng ganito, e. This is an art form na gusto kong ipakita sa ngayon and then, mamaya, magtatanggal na ako ng make up, tutulog na ako ulit bilang lalaki. 'Yun talaga siya,” Eva said.

Eva even confirmed what Nelson Canlas said that some straight men and women join drag in foreign countries.

Eva added, “ Nagkataon lang na 'yun 'yung satire about it, e, it pokes on gender constructs. Kumbaga, it's a gender-bending art form, it's just a play on gender.”

“Whether may mga cis-born female, they dress up as males, they call themselves drag kings. Then, merong mga cis-male like myself who dress up as females, we are drag queens, meron ding mga non-binary,” the drag queen continued.

For Eva, gender is just a concept or a form of construct that society built, and that drag pokes on that. She added that drag lets anyone be anything they want in their life.

“In simple terms, ang lagi kong sinasabi, drag, we sell a fantasy. Ito pong nakikita ninyo, ito po 'yung fantasy ko bilang as a person. Gusto ko na mukha akong mayaman, gusto ko ng mukha akong makinis, 'yung kakong madam, 'yung ganito 'yung buhok. Pero on an ordinary day, wala naman naglalakad ng ganito sa kalsada, 'di ba?” Eva ended
