Dora Dorado

Dora Dorado shares his view on the upcoming elections and why it matters to stick to facts “point, blank, period.”

If Macoy Dubs is considered the Internet's favorite aunt, social media star Dora Dorado is the web's favorite socially-aware gay best friend.

Dora, also known as @doracrybaby, rose to fame during the quarantine thanks to hilarious TikTok entries that deliver humor and light to political issues in a way that he only knows how: dancing.

Here, GMANetwork.com caught up with Dora in We The Youth Vote to encourage Gen Z-ers to register in the coming elections and why it matters to stick to facts when it comes to political debate among your peers.

GMANetwork.com: Hi Dora, in your opinion how crucial is it for the youth to register for the coming elections?

Dora: “I think hindi pa rin namamartilyo sa utak nating lahat 'yung importance ng pagboto and importance ng age group natin.

“Kasi if you count the years and in a couple of decades, tayo na 'yung 40-year olds na mamumuno sa bansa natin. Parang dito na nagma-manifest 'yung sinabi ni Dr. Jose Rizal na ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan. As cliche as it sounds, totoong totoo siya and this is the perfect time to educate each other.

“It starts with voter's registration talaga kasi without that hindi tayo makakamove on sa next steps.”

G: What creative ways can you do to encourage the public to register despite the pandemic?

D: “For the safety ng gusto magpa-register, ako nagpunta na ako ng government office these past few weeks. Nagpunta na ako ng BIR twice to figure out my taxes and renew 'yung TIN ko.

“We have to give credit to our government offices because they are doing their best to make the space safer for everyone.

“Ngayon, it's all a matter of cooperation from the citizens and the LGUs na sundin lahat ng protocols.

“Responsibility rin ng citizens na magbilang ng mga araw at 'pag masama na ang pakiramdam 'wag nang lalabas. So, if eligible kang lumabas at 'di ka pa registered merong mga pamamaraan na mare-reduce natin 'yung risk to the minimum. Meron din namang additional steps to reduce your risk of getting the virus tulad ng pagkuha ng forms online which you can fill out at home.”

G: How would you persuade a healthy political discourse among your peers?

D: “Well, we've always been trying to destroy that idea na, if hindi ka dito, doon ka sa kabilang party kasi hindi siya ganun. I think 'yung thought na 'yun pinlant lang ng mga tao online and hindi talaga siya nagho-hold through.

“How we can have a healthy discussion with our peers is that you stick to your facts and you stick to valid information. If ma-prove na wrong 'yung information mo, then you have to concede kasi it takes a huge amount of humility and knowledge to admit that you are wrong. 'Yun ang minsan nagkukulang sa mga tao na takot silang magkamali at takot amining nagkamali sila.

“So ako, the way na nagdi-discuss ako with my friends kasi 'pag nagkamali ka, mali ka -- point, blank, period. Let's stick to facts at walang personalan.”

G: How do you become a responsible content creator when talking about politics in social media?

D: “Ako naman when it comes to responsible content creation, hinahaluan ko ng komedya at sayaw at times. Pero ang responsible content creation is you reacting to what's happening around you, e.

“When it comes to influencers na hindi nagsasalita about anything, aaminin ko nung una, iniisip ko dapat ginagamit nila 'yung platform. Pero naisip ko rin na what if may tie-up sila o may kontrata sila na bawal? Gets? Doon ko naintindihan na baka regulated din sila.

“Pero something as simple as spreading information about voter registration, feeling ko harmless naman 'yun so at least that mabigay naman ng mga content creator na malaki ang following.”
