Ghosting linked to depression

Have you been a victim of 'ghosting'?

In celebration of Valentine's Day today, State of the Nation released a special feature about “ghosting” and how to avoid being a victim of it.

“Ghosting” is the act of suddenly ending a personal relationship with someone without explanation.

State of the Nation featured Sienna Calanog, a victim of ghosting.

According to her, it was in 2016 when her ex-fiancé proposed to her in New York City.

Days after the fairy-tale like milestone, he suddenly cut his ties with her and disappeared like a ghost.

“After that, sobrang wala nang kasunod. Walang ni ha ni ho, wala akong narinig.

“I tried to reach him sa lahat ng paraan na magagawa ko. Emails, social media, ini-block niya 'ko,” Sienna said.

Months after, she discovered that his ex-fiance have already replaced her and happily enjoying other woman's company.

“Akala ko lang nagso-soul searching siya. Pero ni-ghost niya pala ako.”

Meanwhile, cultural analyst Prof. Jimuel Naval said that "ghosting" have long been practiced in the country and it was because of Filipino's cautious and shy attitude.

“Hindi kasi tayo prangka minsan, e.

“Ayaw nating masaktan, ayaw nating makasakit ng tao kaya iniipon na lang natin, itinatago na lang natin. Gusto mo na lang mag-disappear,” he said.

But according to a psychologist, the parents' kind of upbringing is playing a big role on how a person would treat his/her romantic partner.

“Batang-bata 'yung isip. As I said to you, very immature.

Maybe the parents were absent not only physically but emotionally, psychologically,” said Dr. Estrella Magno.

She also said that "ghosting" could lead to serious trauma.

“Depression will set in, the helplessness, the hopelessness. 'Bakit ba ako iniwan? Wala ba akong kwenta? Bakit? Okay naman ako.' Sinisisi 'yung sarili nila.”
