According to Emanuele Farneti, editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, they chose white to symbolize hope for a brighter future.

With businesses and shops closed, photoshoots canceled, and employees working from home, you can't help but wonder how does the fashion industry look now?

Well, Vogue Italia has the answer.

For their April issue, the Italian-issued Vogue put out an all-white, blank page for their cover. As the virus continues to devastate the country of Italy, the publication says they are taking things seriously.

As written by editor-in-chief Emanuele Farneti in his letter, “Some people say that the raison d'être (purpose) of Vogue is to entertain - to offer a few hours of divertissement (diversion) to those who leaf through its pages. I don't know about that.

“But to speak of anything else - while people are dying, doctors and nurses are risking their lives and the world is changing forever - is not the DNA of Vogue Italia.

In the letter, Emanuele shared the three goals for the said issue: (1) To imagine life after the pandemic without self-pity, (2) To gather a community of artists stuck at home and create a snapshot of the “new world,” and (3) To print a completely white cover for the first time in the magazine's history.

He added, “The decision to print a completely white cover for the first time in our history is not because there was any lack of images - quite the opposite. We chose it because white signifies many things at the same time.”

According to the editor-in-chief, the white symbolizes a brighter future not just for the magazine but for the whole world.

He wrote, “White is not to surrender, but a blank sheet waiting to be written, the title page of a new story that is about to begin.”
