As StarStruck: The Next Level ends, iGMA.tv looks back at the journey that has changed the lives of the six who remain in the race. Text by Jason John S. Lim and Jessa Ericka C. Bien. Photos by Connie B. Tungul. It was in the first week of September last year when the Kapuso network announced the start of the search for the next batch of StarStruck. Hundreds of teens trooped to the network building and in various audition spots, hopeful for a chance at the spotlight. To keep the reality-based artista search fresh, the game play was changed. The age requirement was expanded to include those from 16 to 21 year old. From everyone who auditioned, 80 were retained. And for the first two weeks, their number was cut down to 40, then to the Final 20. Their talent, strength and determination were tested. This time around, each challenge was more intense and difficult. And taking everything to another level, a pair was eliminated every week. This was the process until the Avengers struck back in a series of tests that gave them another chance to return. In several tests, Survivors and Avengers had to prove their mettle alongside top artists in the industry. There were acclaimed actresses Ms. Jean Garcia and Alessandra De Rossi, well-respected directors Ms. Laurice Guillen, Gina Alajar, Khryss Adalla and Mark Reyes, dance masters Douglas Nierras and Geleen Eugenio; the songbird and the songwriter tandem of Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid. Now, only six remain standing on the StarStruck stage as they prepare for the Final Judgment: Aljur Abrenica, Kris Bernal, Prince Stefan, Jewel Mische, Mart Escudero, and Rich Asuncion. Through the Eye of a Needle Surviving one challenge after another, the scrutiny of the council and a nationwide tour, the six remaining contenders are focused on winning an Ultimate Title. With their regular guest appearances, their nationwide tour and their brimming schedule, their free time is spent on getting more support for their bid at stardom. “Pag may time nga pumupunta ako sa mga tita ko, tapos nagbibigay ako ng mga cards sa kanila. Sila na bahala magpasa-pasa ng mga (campaign) cards,” Kris notes. Campaigning is crucial because 50% of their total score comes from SMS and Internet votes. The others are not far behind. “Ako po, pag may time, umuuwi ako ng Pampanga. Tapos, maaga po ako gumigising para makapag-campaign sa school,” Aljur shares. Rich particularly exerts extra effort as she believes her bottom rank before was due to her inability to campaign for herself. Prince is another Survivor who works hard to campaign for himself, especially since his family isn’t well-off and most of his supporters reside in the province. Mart and Jewel also focus on their supporters: keeping them happy and satisfied with their weekly performances! Final Judgment “Ito na ‘yung last chance para patunayan ko sa mga tao na karapat-dapat ako,” Prince says after he was named as part of the Survivor 6. Jewel echoes that opinion, saying that all of them will definitely be giving their best efforts on the finale night, and adds, “All of us are winners already.” But what exactly will make them win? “Their desire to win, their ambition (can make them win),” council member Douglas Quijano says. “Kasi they have to prove that they are better than the others.” This Sunday, the competition ends. Who among Prince, Aljur and Mart will become the Ultimate Hunk? From Kris, Jewel and Rich, who will claim the title Ultimate Sweetheart?
