In this iGMA exclusive, Karylle discloses her thoughts on being a singer and actress, and her very supportive boyfriend.
Sundays in the Kapuso network are typically busy, noisy and full of party people jamming to the beat of the concert TV SOP. Amidst this hustle and bustle, we caught up with one of the show’s gems: Karylle. In this iGMA exclusive, Karylle discloses her thoughts on being a singer and actress, and her very supportive boyfriend. Text by Jessa Ericka C. Bien. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.
It’s been almost three years since Karylle and heartthrob Dingdong Dantes have been together as a couple. From a relationship that started with friendship, they have grown into a pair who understands the demands of each other’s career and trusts and empathizes with the other.
Setting limits on each other is not even a part of their relationship.
“We’re actually very supportive of each other” she discloses. “Sometimes, he reminds me, ‘alam mong gawin at hindi dapat gawin’ but that’s the extreme. It just shows na alam niya na alam ko naman ang dapat kong gawin”.
But will this understanding remain even when one of them goes daring?
“Hmmm” Karylle thoughtfully smiles. “It’s up to him naman eh” she says.
She seems comfortable with it as Dingdong is an endorser of men’s underwear. “It’s up to his discretion.”
And when asked if she will ever consider posing for a men’s magazine, Karylle replies with a surprised laugh. “No” she exclaims. “Not that I’m putting them down, pero I think it’s just not me” she tactfully explains.
On Singing
The singer that she is, Karylle says she never fails to vocalize and attend voice lessons every once in a while. Just recently, she also started taking piano lessons to sharpen her hearing skills. At this point, she fondly remembers Dingdong’s most special gift to date: a second-hand piano she personally helped him pick.
At present, Karylle is writing songs for an upcoming album and will start recording when everything has been finalized. As a full-pledged singer, she ardently hopes for the day when she can come up with an album she can totally call her own: from the words to the music and the production.
Complementing this album is a dream concert, where her closest friends can gather in a lush garden watching her perform in her slippers.
“I would one day like to be known as a singer-songwriter” she goes on saying. She admits looking up to Ogie Alcasid, who has established himself so well in the industry. “I just really respect that he does that” she says.
On Iza and Acting
While Karylle makes a name in the industry through her voice and music, boyfriend Dingdong plots his own career as the next big thing in Philippine television.
After starring in various soap operas, Dingdong has won the hearts of most viewers especially when he is paired with the equally lovely Iza Calzado.
With a tried-and-tested on-screen chemistry, the Dingdong and Iza tandem have been through the typical boy-meets-girl characters to intimate lovers.
Just how does it feel for her – the girlfriend?
“I can trust her” Karylle confidently answers. She actually considers it a blessing that Iza is Dingdong’s on-screen counterpart. “Pinsan ko naman siya (and) she’s my friend. So I’m very blessed na kahit papano, it’s somebody I know.”
However, there have been times when the lovebirds have been in projects together. The most unforgettable of which, is the
Encantadia series. Aside from singing and dancing, Karylle also takes on acting: an interest she discovered after starring in
Twin Hearts .
“I always turned down projects before, (because) there was a time that I was really against acting. I never wanted to act. I just wanted to dance or sing” she narrates. It was only after enjoying a trial role in the said show that she realized she wanted to act.
From a supposed week’s appearance, she returned as another character that played a very vital role in the story.
Karylle is certain there is a lot more she has to learn. Never closing doors for on improvements and opportunities, there definitely will be a lot more we can expect from her.
