Lumpiang shanghai

The published list drew mixed reactions from passionate Pinoy foodies.

The lumpiang shanghai is named as the “best Filipino food” according to a list by Taste Atlas, an experiential travel guide to traditional food from around the world.

Garnering an impressive 4.9 rating, the Filipino-style spring roll topped other local favorites to take the honor.

“Even though lumpia appears in numerous variations, the Shanghai version is characterized by a savory filling which combines ground pork or beef with carrots, onions, various seasonings, and (occasionally) shrimps,” wrote Taste Atlas.

“Lumpiang Shanghai is usually sold at numerous street stalls throughout the country, but it is also a staple dish served on special and festive occasions. This delicious and crispy snack is usually served accompanied by sweet and sour dipping sauce.”

Settling for runner-up finish with a 4.8 rating is the popular sinigang, which recently was hailed by Taste Atlas as the world's “best vegetable soup.”

Next is the local breakfast staple tocino with 4.8 stars under its name.

The top three categorized as “best” is followed by other Filipino favorite dishes including sisig, adobo, lechon, all under the “great category,” while daing, pinangat, and torta rounded up the “ok” group.

Categorized, meanwhile, as “worst” are balut, dinuguan, and pinipig.

The ratings are based on reviews and grading submitted by food critics and Taste Atlas users.

As expected, the final results drew mixed reactions from the public with some favoring a dish over the other.

“Sisig and Lechon has to be ranked as 'The Very Best,'” commented one follower.

Another comment reads, “Dinuguan and balut are Filipino faves.”

There are also those who questioned the absence of other popular local food favorites from the list.

“Where are kare kare and kinilaw?” asked a follower in disbelief.

“Can't trust a list that doesn't have Kare-Kare as the best,” scathingly said another.
