Retelling a classic movie to fit a television setting is never easy. And for Maging Akin Ka Lamang, Director Gil Tejada is tasked with intriguing people and keeping them interested, even though everyone already knows how the story unfolds. Love comes with many faces, and in Maging Akin Ka Lamang, Director Gil Tejada must give a new face for a classic movie which produced two award-winning actors: Jay Ilagan and Lorna Tolentino. How does the director plan on making the remake as classic as the original material? “Well for one thing, we must be faithful to the story,” Direk Gil begins. The hard-working director didn’t hesitate to share with iGMA about his plans for the sixth Sine Novela installment -- which is to keep the original theme of the story, the original wants and needs of the characters. “Dapat intact ‘yun.” Being completely faithful to the original material is impossible, especially for a drama series that was based on a less-than-two-hour movie. New characters and new twists need to be added to keep the program fresh, and to make it last its entire run without becoming dragging. Direk Gil knows this, and he wants to make sure that even when they’ve gone into new territory, they will still remain within the original framework of the story. “We have to make palapot everything eh,” the director explains. “We have to do something para nang sa ganu’n, this remake for television would be a success also. We have to adapt it to a contemporary setting, to make it a worthwhile watch. That’s a big factor.” And with the original movie having won three acting awards, Direk Gil also knows that he has to make sure the acting in his remake will be up to par with the movie. "I really make piga talaga.” The director admits that he treats his stars equally, whether they’re new in the industry or one of the veterans. He says that because the characters they are playing are already proven favorites, the new actors should be worth the characters that have been given to them. “Importante ‘yan.” But the director is optimistic about his cast. And though the chemistry of his actors aren’t tested yet, it remains that where there’s passion and the willingness to learn, magic can happen. “Ngayon kung pwede pang higitan ‘yung ginawa ng cast sa movie, then much better." “Para nang sa ganoon, sasabihin naman ng tao, worthwhile naman ‘yung panunuod namin.” See if Direk Gil lives up to his promise!
