Blogger and content creator Kryz Uy knows how it is to be a certified girl boss.
Aside from her blog, YouTube channel, and accessory brand, she recently opened a storage unit business called Extra Space to the public in her hometown in Cebu.
For the 29-year-old Cebuana beauty, adding the title CEO of Extra Space was all thanks to a little light-bulb moment she had when she was decluttering her room.
“It started when I was trying to organize my closet and found myself just needing more room,” she shares with GMANetwork.com.
“I love fashion and all my clothes bring me joy - sorry, Marie Kondo - so I wanted to find a good home for them.”
It got worse by the time wedding preparations had begun as she found herself in need of more space.
“We had to store all our invites, décor, gifts we had prepared for our ninongs and ninangs, our bridal party, and the suppliers - all in my house.
“And finally, when we started purchasing what we needed to start our own home, we stored most of those things in Slater's parents' house. Think, sofas, stoves, refrigerators, TVs etcetera.”
Despite the spatial support, Kryz admits feeling like a burden to both her parents and parents-in-law.

All these then convinced her and husband Slater Young to look for a storage space unit that met her requirements - accessible, clean, and of course, safe.
“There are a lot of storage spaces in the market, but nothing that suited my needs.
“Most of them were container vans in far locations, with unpaved floors - hard for a girl in heels, let me tell you!”
As they say, if you can't find what you're looking for then the next solution will be creating one.
Born out of necessity, Kryz figured that this need is surely what others require too. With everyone's lives changing - getting married, starting a family, moving into a new home - “the need for extra space just seemed unanimous.”
When she finally launched, the next steps were easy for Kryz as she saw there were a number of condominiums and businesses sprouting about in Cebu.
“Everywhere you turn, there's construction on yet another condo. Not to mention the growing popularity of concepts like tiny living and minimalism.
“People want simpler lives and less clutter. However, there are some things you still can't get rid of, but you don't use every single day.”
Like any business, there are hurdles that the Cebuana blogger must also face and these were educating the public and figuring out how to insure every asset will be kept safe and secure.
“When we first opened, we got a lot of questions about what our business actually was.
“People were asking if they could live there, or if we had cooking facilities available! Maybe because we made it so pretty and colorful?
“Also, although we have a security system in place and sprinklers in all the units, it's still better to be safe and get insurance anyway.
“So, in the end, we opted to let people decide on their own if they want to insure their items themselves or if they want us to do it for them.”
Decluttering 101: Self-storage units
As the interview comes to a close, Kryz couldn't help but share what she has learned during the process.
“Build a community, ask for help when you need it. Your area of expertise is limited and by reaching out, you help the entire industry grow.
“It's all about having an abundance mindset.
“Secondly, be brave, even though it's really scary at first. You might think 'If I never put myself out there, then I can never fail!' But, you can never succeed either.” she ends.
