“When I was a kid, I was so insecure…” Gabbi Garcia has some revelations about about her struggles as a 'morena.'
Kapuso global endorser Gabbi Garcia opened up about her struggles as a morena trying to find her place in showbiz.
In a vlog by popular photographer BJ Pascual, Gabbi admitted to feeling so insecure when she started attending go-sees and VTRs because of the color of her skin.
She revealed, “When I was a kid, I was so insecure because 'di ba 'yun time na sobrang uso 'yung mga VTRs, 'yung mga ganun, tapos mag-o-audition ka, mag-b-VTR ka for a commercial.”
“Out of 30 plus or 40 plus VTRs, parang tatlo lang 'yung commercial ko. You know why?
“I was so insecure when I was a kid kasi 'yung laging mga kinukuha 'yung mga may lahi. 'Yun 'yung mabenta before, e.
“And I was just this cute kid tapos sobrang morena ako.
“Parang 'yun 'yung laging final callback tapos laging hindi ko siya nakukuha because 'yung mga nakukuha, laging 'yung mga may lahi, 'yung mga half-half.
“So sobrang at first, I was so insecure na parang, 'Bakit ganun? Wala bang spaces, wala bang spot for, like, Pinay beauty?'"
Gabbi also admitted that when she was still newbie in the business, many people advised her to take whitening products.
She entered show business in 2014 when she was a fourth-year high school student.
She recalled, “Kasi nung high school ako, parang, I didn't care that much about skin color. Parang, wala lang siya sa akin.”
“Tapos nung pumasok ako sa industry, doon ko talaga na-figure out na in the industry, maraming mga sabi-sabi na people who are gonna say na 'Alam mo kailangan mo magpaputi para makakuha ka ng ganito' or 'Kailangan mas okey kapag maputi ka.'
“Doon ko na-realize the importance of loving yourself and your skin color, na hindi ka magpapa-sway sa ibang tao.
“Kasi it's like crashing your confidence na, imagine people around you, telling you, 'Your skin color is not good enough, you have to be whiter.'
“Kaya parang, when I entered the industry na nakita ko maraming taong ganun, doon mas nag-build up 'yung confidence ko na, 'Hindi, I'll love myself even more because of these people around me.'”
