Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell first wore her iconic Union Jack dress to the 1997 Brit Awards where she was performing with her girlband the Spice Girls.
She shares that the outfit originally a little back dress from Gucci which she customized herself with a tea towel printed with the Union Jack. She even asked the help of her sister in sewing it.
"I remember showing it to a stylist and she said to me, 'You can't wear that.' She actually said you cannot wear that. It's racist. It's National Front. Now that is an extreme party that existed in Britain that was very racist," she explained.
"I was like oh my goodness. No, stop. We celebrate all cultures. So that's why I put the peace sign on the back," she added.
Geri went on to wear it at the BRITs, pairing it with bright red boots, which she also customized using car spray from her father's garage.
She is also glad who the dress became associated with the Spice Girls mantra, girl power.
"That dress really became the identity of what girl power stood for. People would wear their own version of it. Suddenly you started seeing the British flag on a lot of fashion. It came back to that thing of being proud of who we are," Geri says.
When she left the Spice Girls, the dress sold at an auction for a whopping £41,000--a world record a piece of pop culture memorabilia.
In 2007, the Spice Girls did a reunion tour where they were dressed by Roberto Cavalli. The designer recreated Geri's iconic Union Jack dress with crystals.
"For me, wearing the Union Jack dress, I'm always quite mindful because it's had such a moment. To sort of really try to recapture that moment, is it really gonna work? We really needed to sort of turn the volume up on it. Cavalli did that with crystals," she explained.
Geri is proud that the dress has left such an impression on their fans.
"The wonderful thing was that the Spice Girls fans have grown up with us. It was lovely for every country that we went to, we'd see girls and guys in the Union Jack dress. It's almost like a uniform, unifying us all," she says.
"It's wonderful, 22 years later, to still see people in a Union Jack dress. That pride, that power, that never goes out of fashion," Geri adds.
