It’s true what they all say about Gladys Reyes. She is a total sweetheart. It’s amazing how she pulled off her former kontrabida roles so effortlessly. Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco.
This first-time mom has been playing Kelly Mulingtapang, loving wife to Manny Boy (
Wendell Ramos) in GMA’s top-rating sitcom Bahay Mo Ba 'To? for almost two years now.
“Isa sa mga similarities ni Kelly at saka ni Gladys siguro as a mom is I’m very hands on doon sa son namin,” shares Gladys, referring to her first baby with Christopher Roxas, Gian Christophe.
Gladys adds another similarity: “Tapos as a wife, I would like to believe na siyempre, maasikaso naman ako sa asawa ko at saka naibibigay ko naman ‘yung needs niya. Hindi ko pinapaubaya sa kung kani-kaninong tao lang na kasama sa bahay, kung ano ‘yung kailangan ng asawa ko, kung baga as a wife, hands on din ako, kasi parang gusto kong i-preserve yung pagsasama namin, na talagang personalized. Hindi ‘yung inaasa ko sa ibang tao ‘yung mga needs ng asawa ko.”
On the show Kelly operates a mini sari-sari store, while Manny Boy, her husband, is a tri-bike driver. Gladys says that like Kelly, she has entrepreneurial skills of her own. “Ako naman in real life, siyempre, katulad ngayon, may baby na, mayroon kaming bagong business ng mag-asawa. It's KSA Magic Whitening Beauty Products.”
Gladys’s new business will soon open in Metropolis Alabang, although it’s already commercially available in selected outlets. This fair-skinned chinita shares her inspiration for the business: “Ang dami na rin namang nagtatanong, thank you na rin sa nanay ko, kasi inalagaan niya yung balat ko, ‘no? Pero para pang-maintain din, before kasi, I used to put calamansi, sa underarm. I never used mga deodorant, ganiyan, and even sa mga tuhod, siko, ganiyan. So ngayon, I asked my tita na chemist to come up with something na mayroon na siyang vitamin C, and at the same time, may whitening effect na siya. All natural herbal extracts, fruit extracts.”
One of Kelly’s most endearing traits is her malambing nature towards her husband, played by Wendell Ramos. In fact, she plays the aggressive party when it comes to intimate affairs! Her favorite term, “wisik-wisk,” refers to the secret language she and her husband share when it comes to being all lovey-dovey in the shower. The only problem is, the “shower” isn’t really a shower. Because the Mulingtapangs aren’t that well off, they don’t have the luxury of free-flowing water – thus the term “wisik!”
“Siguro hindi naman ako ganun kadalas mag wisik-wisik (in real life)! At saka si Kelly kasi, parang siya ‘yung nag-i-initiate na magwisik-wisik, siya ‘yung aggressive, while in real life, siyempre ‘yung asawa ko ‘yung nag-i-initiate noon, di ba?” jokes Gladys. She continues, “Si Kelly, walang pinipiling lugar! Parang nasa labas ng tindahan, ganiyan, parang patutulugin lang ‘yung mga bata, yayayain na si Manny Boy! Tapos minsan, kahit na tag-ulan, yayayaing mag-wisik-wisik! Parang ang ginaw, di ba?”
Gladys explains that since she gave birth in January this year, the
Bahay Mo Ba ‘To? staff also decided to give Julius and Junabeth (Gladys and Manny Boy’s kids) a third sibling. This added more flavor to the show, where the two sides of one family are at constant war with the other.
“Ang ka-conflict ko (sa show), sina
Sherilyn Reyes, si Jessica Benoit…Kami, kahit mahirap lang kami, may three kids na kami ni Wendell, pero on the contrary, sila, walang anak, so parang nagpapatalbugan kami. May anak kami, tapos tatlo pa, tapos sila, ni hindi sila makabuo kahit isa.”
“Laging may lesson!” says Gladys, referring to the weekly episodes of the sitcom. “Kasi nga, ang Bahay Mo Ba ‘To? is pang-family. Maraming Filipino families ang nakaka-relate talaga sa show namin, kasi ‘yung mga pangyayari dito, nag-re-reflect doon sa totoong pangyayari sa buhay nila.”
She cites three episodes as examples. The first is the “contrabida episode” with Mylene Dizon. Mylene played Kelly’s ex-classmate who gets her revenge by making Kelly wash the dishes at her restaurant and by kidnapping Julius and Junabeth. “Mayroong morals na parang siyemre, ‘wag ka ngang manglalait ng kapwa mo, kasi you’ll never know, in the future, siya naman ‘yung nasa ibabaw, ikaw naman ‘yung nasa ilalim,” she says.
The second is the first out of town episode in Cebu, where Manny Boy becomes jealous of Christian Vasquez, who guest starred. “Akala may gusto sa akin, there’s something going on between me and Christian. Ang (lesson) naman doon, huwag ka munang mag-judge kaagad, kung hindi mo alam ‘yung buong story.”
And last but not the least, there’s the episode with
Ruffa Gutierrez, where she diagnosed Kelly’s kids to have some rare disease. “Tapos wala kaming pambayad kasi mahirap lang kami, so parang doon naman sa story, pinakita naman ‘yung pagkakaisa nung family -- pagka ‘yung time na down na down, hindi lang yung times na in good times talaga na para bang doon lang nagkakasundo. This time, pati yung ka-conflict namin na family, sina Tita Tessie, tinulungan kami, para ma-save’yung dalawang anak namin ni Wendell,” says Gladys.
The
Bahay Mo Ba ‘To? episodes do not only offer valuable lessons, they are also quite a joy to make for the actors themselves. Gladys says they always look forward to Tuesdays – their shooting day. “Even (if) magkaiba yung dressing rooms namin, minsan, sila ‘yung nandito…magkakainan kami dito, magkwe-kwentuhan, kaya minsan, ang tagal-tagal namin sa taping, mas matagal pa ‘yung kwentuhan namin!”
“We’re turning two this month (September), and consistently, awa ng Diyos, dahil sa suporta ng mga manonood namin, avid viewers namin, ‘yung ratings namin very consistent, and thank you so much!” Gladys says.
