Gloc-9 opens up about society's expectations on his empowering tracks
Filipinos have long regarded Gloc-9 as one of the most empowering and inspiring OPM artists in the country.
Through the years, the Pinoy rapper has released songs that remain iconic and many of which tackle socially relevant themes.
In a recent press conference for his newly launched album with Abaddon, the hitmaker opened up about his creative process in writing empowering songs.
"Babalik po ulit tayo sa intensyon. 'Yung songs na iyon sinulat ko hindi dahil gusto ko mag parinig," he told the press. " 'Yung intensyon ko to write those songs ay to say kung ano 'yung nararamdaman ko. Wala nang iba. Ganun lang kasimple."
Looking back, Gloc-9 believes the purity of intention behind his music makes his songs resonate deeply and stand the test of time.
"I think 'yung characteristic nung kanta naiyon dahil doon mas nagiging pure siya pagdating sa tenga ng ibang tao. Wala siyang bahid ng ibang intensyon. So I just want to say how I feel about things," he explained.
Gloc-9's music has more personal depth, inspired by real-life stories.
"Nung time na isinulat ko 'yung songs na iyon, nag-aaral ako ng nursing (at) nagdu-duty ako sa public hospitals. First hand ko nakikita 'yung situation na kinakalooban ng mga kababayan natin. I think iyon 'yung pinaka-pure na intensyon na pwede mong makuha kung ikaw ay isang writer. I think 'yun din naghatid ng malinis at tsaka walang halong kahit ano sa puso rin ng ibang tao and I'm very, very proud of the songs that I written."
While fans continue to associate him with socially conscious music, Gloc-9 acknowledged that not every song must come from public expectation.
"Minsan parang," he stated. "Pero hindi dahil people expect you to say something, magsasalita ka. I think iyon medyo ibang intensyon na 'yun."
Recently, Gloc-9's iconic song “Upuan” resurfaced as it was being used by netizens in rallies and public discussions.
Meanwhile, the rapper explores new creative directions through his collaboration album Project A with Abaddon. Listeners can expect a refreshing side of Gloc-9, featuring lighter themes and experimental styles.
