Host and former Ateneo student-athlete Gretchen Ho called for transparency and compassion following the deaths of basketball players Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia

Gretchen Ho calls for transparency, respect amid grief over deaths of Ateneo players

Host and former Ateneo volleyball player Gretchen Ho shared her thoughts on the deaths of basketball players Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia, saying the tragedy has deeply affected members of the Ateneo community while calling for both compassion and transparency as investigations continue.

In a social media post, Gretchen said the incident hit "very close to home" as a former student-athlete of Ateneo.

"As a former student-athlete of Ateneo, this tragedy hits very close to home. It is deeply painful," she wrote.

Gretchen acknowledged that there are still unanswered questions surrounding the incident but expressed confidence in the multi-stakeholder body tasked with investigating what happened.

"There are legitimate questions about what happened, and I trust that the multi-stakeholder body formed by the PSC, together with representatives from the UAAP, SBP, CHED, and NYC, will establish the facts and present them to the public at the appropriate time," she said.

At the same time, Gretchen urged the public to recognize that many people are still processing the loss of the two young athletes.

"Understandably, people are still in a state of shock, and we should allow them this space to grieve and find their footing," she said.

However, the television host also stressed the importance of addressing concerns surrounding the incident, warning that a lack of information could fuel speculation.

"Silence will only allow speculation and false narratives to thrive. We trust that the institution we call home will do the right thing," she added.

Ateneo earlier confirmed that Divine, a 21-year-old Nigerian center, and Rene, a 19-year-old incoming Blue Eagles rookie, died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. Their deaths have sparked an outpouring of grief from the Ateneo community and the wider Philippine sports scene.
