The ham or hamon has been part of the Filipino Christmas tradition since the Spanish rule in the Philippines.
In a recent episode of Pinas Sarap, social anthropologist Jimmuel Naval shared many fun facts about the Pinoy Christmas favorite.
First fact about the hamon is that it was not necessarily a Christmas food, but rather a winter season food, and it was also often eaten by travelers, because like what Naval said: “Ang hamon ay pang matagalan na pagkain.”
Another fun fact about the hamon is that it used to be a status symbol since only the frailes and well-off families could afford to serve ham on their dinner tables.
Also, the ham was consumed as a pica-pica or finger food and not as a main dish like we do now.
