Kinky Boots in Broadway

Singer-songwriter and '80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper wrote the lyrics and music for the musical.

Here's your chance to see the West End production of the hit musical, Kinky Boots.

Philippine viewers can watch the stage spectacle for free via The Shows Must Go On! YouTube channel tomorrow, December 19, at 3 A.M. It will be available for viewing for 48 hours only.

Based on the hit 2005 movie of the same title, Kinky Boots follows the story of Price, who reluctantly inherits a struggling shoe factory from his father.

A meeting with a drag queen named Lola prompts Price to embrace a flamboyant business model to kick in some life (and style) to the failing venture. This means designing high-heeled boots for fellow drag queens.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper ("Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time") provided the music and lyrics to the play.

American actor-playwright Harvey Fierstein wrote the book of the musical.

The musical made its stage debut at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago on October 2, 2012.

Kinky Boots then took its act to the prestigious Broadway theatre in New York City where it earned rave reviews from viewers and critics. Jerry Mitchell directed and provided the choreography to the musical.

The stage performance was applauded by some for promoting “diversity,” “inclusivity,” and “helping open people's minds” on the subject concerning the LGBTQIA+ community.

Some though lamented that the musical was “not family-oriented,” although a majority of the reviews were favorable and complimentary.

Kinky Boots went on to win six Tony awards, three Laurence Olivier Awards, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

The musical's original cast for the principal roles includes Stark Sands, Killian Donnelly, Billy Porter, Matt Henry, Annaleigh Ashford, Amy Lennox, Lena Hall, and Amy Ross.

Kinky Boots has been staged and adapted in other countries, including Japan, Australia, Poland, Hamburg, Ireland, and the UK.

The show that will be streamed for free was filmed in the Adelphi Theatre in London.

A local production of the musical was first staged here in the Philippines in 2017. The initial success inspired Atlantis Theatrical production to do a rerun in 2018, with singer Nyoy Volante reprising his impressive take on drag queen Lola.

“The show, in a nutshell, is telling you to be yourself,” Nyoy told writer Marane Plaza in a magazine interview in 2018.

“The message is to be yourself and do what makes you happy. In certain ways and parts of the show, that's the message. Of course, all of these are shown in a fabulous show--dancing and singing.”

The Philippines has, of course, produced talents that we're able to perform in the prestigious Broadway in New York.

One of these is singer Rachelle An Go.

We might not be able to see the 34-year-old talented singer on stage for quite a while. Rachelle, who is married to businessman Martin Spies, announced last month that she is pregnant with her first child.

Take a look at Rachelle's journey to motherhood in this gallery.
