Director Erik Matti is happy with the inclusion of four independent movies to Netflix's roster of Filipino films for this month.
The award-winning director was pertaining to the movies Apocalypse Child, Patay na si Hesus, Balangiga: Howling Wilderness, and Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington.
All mentioned titles will debut on the popular streaming platform before Christmas.
“Happy that all four of these films will be releasing to the audience of Netflix this December 20,” Erik wrote on Facebook.
“I'm happy that the filmmakers of these films are happy. But more than them being grateful for the help we extended them, we, Dondon Monteverde, Stacey Bascon, are more happy to be given the chance to represent these beautiful films under our Reality Entertainment brand.”
Reality Entertainment is the production company co-founded by Erik.
Apparently, the company helped broker the deal that sent the four films to Netflix.
“We sell our own films to Netflix too but we also help others, whose films we love and deserve a wide exposure, to connect with Netflix,” Erik enthused.
“Whether our company closes down or not, our commitment to helping other filmmakers' films stays with no agenda on just pushing only for our own brand to populate the market and monopolize the exposure just to suppress fellow film producers' content.
“We believe that everyone should have a crack at sharing our films to the widest audience possible without hindering production companies to get the proper attention to their well- deserved acclaimed films.
“It shouldn't just be about us. It should be about anything and everything Pinoy films.”
Erik is a staunch supporter of the local movie scene and often gets into hot water for his controversial comments.
In April, the director commented critically on Korean drama shows.
He called K-dramas “faux cinderella stories with belofied actors whiter than white. And it's all about love in the midst of this pandemic.”
Erik said that Filipino movies and TV series are “doomed in the future” after learning about the strong showing of K-dramas on Netflix during the nationwide lockdown.
The director's outburst drew the ire of K-drama fans who lambasted Erik for his opinion.
One person called Erik's comments “reeking with narcissistic outrage” while another said that the director's “hatred is uncalled for.”
Erik's resume includes the movies On the Job, Honor Thy Father, Seklusyon, BuyBust, and Mano Po 2, among many others.
He will be directing a Philippine episode for the second season of the HBO Asia horror anthology series Folklore.
