Two of the award-winning I-Witness documentaries of renowned GMA journalists Kara David and Atom Araullo took part at this year's Cinemalaya.
David's "Ambulansyang de Paa" and Araullo's "Bawat Barya" were screened at Cinema 2 of Ayala Malls Manila Bay last August 8, Thursday, as part of the Cultural Central of the Philippines' (CCP) Gawad Alternatibo.
The Gawad Alternatibo recognizes works of Filipino filmmakers in animation, experimental, short feature, and documentary.
"Ambulansyang de Paa," which focused on the lack of accessible healthcare in the remote village of Bansud, Oriental Mindoro, was awarded the George Foster Peabody in 2009.
Araullo's "Bawat Barya," meanwhile, told the story of two boys who fish for coins in dirty canal waters. The documentary won Silver in the New York Festival TV & Film Awards 2024 Documentary: Social Issues category.
A talkback with David then followed the screening of the award-winning social pieces.
David said she never expected her documentary to be shown on the big screen and to even win a Peabody award.
David then reminded aspiring documentarists, "You're not doing this for the big screen, you're not doing this for the award, you're doing this because the story deserves to be told. Ganon kasimple, kasi kailangan malaman ng tao ang istoryang ito."
When asked what is one takeaway she wants the audience to get from the documentary, David told GMANetwork.com, “Ang mabigat ay gumagaan kapag marami ang pumapasan.”
Meanwhile, Mav Gonzales's “Sisid sa Putik” and Howie Severino's “Boat to School” were also screened at the Cinemalaya on August 7, Wednesday, also at the Cinema 2 of Ayala Malls Manila Bay.
I-Witness is the flagship documentary program of GMA Public Affairs.
