Ice Seguerra on P-pop's global success: "I hope this will open doors to other acts as well."

Ice Seguerra couldn't hide his excitement over the growing global recognition of P-pop acts like BINI and SB19. He believes that their success is a huge win not just for the genre, but for original Filipino music as a whole.

This month, BINI captivated a global audience with their standout performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. On the other hand, SB19 is gearing up to make history with their upcoming appearance at Lollapalooza in 2026.

“Sobrang nae-excite ako sa nangyayari sa P-pop ngayon,” Ice said.

“Kasi, even if we sing very different genres, but the mere fact that different groups from the Philippines are being acknowledged worldwide… or at least sa biggest stages ngayon sa iba-ibang parts ng mundo, for me, that's a win.”

The entertainment media, including GMANetwork.com, interviewed the OPM hitmaker at the media conference of her album Pagdating ng Panahon (25 Years Later).

Ice went on to praise the immense talent of Filipinos, while admitting it saddens him that many local artists still need to seek international platforms just to gain recognition.

“Sa totoo lang, ang galing ng mga Pilipino, e. Ang galing-galing ng mga Pilipino. It makes me sad that… marami sa mga magagaling sa atin kailangan pang sumali ng mga British Got Talent o America's Got Talent para makilala,” he said.

Nevertheless, Ice is optimistic that the international success of groups like BINI and SB19 will pave the way for more Filipino artists.

“So, happy ako na acts like BINI and SB19… kumbaga, kaya nilang dalhin ang mga sarili nila. I hope this will open doors to other acts as well, whether P-pop or other genres in OPM. I really hope that this opens a lot of opportunities for different acts as well,” he said.

Meanwhile, when asked if he ever dreamed of performing on a global stage, Ice admitted that it was never really his goal.

“Alam mo, never ko siyang pinangarap. I mean, I would love to sing with my favorites, yun ang pinangarap ko,” he revealed, naming artists like Sarah McLachlan and Indigo Girls as dream collaborators.

Ice explained that he has always preferred intimate performances over massive arena shows.

“Siguro kasi hindi ko rin nakikita ang sarili ko sa malaking-malaking entablado… Ako, as an artist, I prefer to perform sa smaller venues kasi gusto kong nakikita yung mga kinakantahan ko,” he said.

He added that smaller venues allow for spontaneity and genuine connection with his audience.

“When I perform sa smaller venues, I love the spontaneity—that's where I feel most alive.”

Though he clarified he's not closing his doors to bigger opportunities.

“Hindi naman ako plastik, kapag nabigyan ng opportunity, game. Pero kung sinabihang ginoal ko siya, hindi,” he said with a laugh.
