In Daddy Di Do Du, Danica plays Dinna, a tomboy-turned-girl with the power to freeze time. She talks to iGMA about her character, favorites, and how it’s like working with her real-life dad in the sitcom. “Si Dinna kasi, before, she used to be, parang tomboyish. Now na girl na siya, kasi na-in love siya sa character ni Paolo. At siguro, nag-mature na rin siya. That’s why she was boyish before, kasi, galit siya sa daddy niya who was in Saudi for a long time, so iniwan kami sa mommy, so akala ko na that’s why he left, because he doesn’t care for us. ‘Yun pala, nagwo-work lang siya. So when my mom died, ‘yun, umuwi siya dito, dahil aalagaan niya kami.” Danica is used to being part of a large family, what with the Sotto clan being close. So it isn’t a stretch for her to be playing one of three siblings living under the same roof. “I’m the eldest. Sa tatlong magkakapatid (sa show), si Dinna yung may strong personality. Si Donna (played by Maxene Magalona) yung parang maarte, parang clueless girl, Si Duday (played by Isabella De Leon) yung parang witty; pa-cute na bata. At the same time lahat sila may powers.” Dinna, Donna and Duday acquired their powers through their mom, who was a witch. Their father, Daddy Kul, (played by Vic Sotto) didn’t know about it at first, but he found out soon enough. “What happened was, sa mga parang ‘witchy world’ daw, kunwari witch ako, and then I die, usually kasi, it skips a generation. So dapat magskiskip sa amin, di ba? But since namatay yung mommy namin, na-pass on sa amin ‘yung powers.” The three siblings discovered their powers gradually. Dinna has the power to freeze time, Donna has telekinesis, and Duday can be invisible. “Alam mo yung movie na Matilda? Unti-unti lang niya na-discover na mayroon siyang powers? Pero at first, parang hindi niya alam. So ‘yung powers ko, kaya kong magfreeze ng mga tao, o ng bagay, or stop time. Or, makakaisip ako ng what [the other is] thinking.” One of the best things about playing Dinna for Danica is getting to work closely with her real-life dad, Vic Sotto. “Masaya, kasi parang bonding time na rin namin; parang you don’t consider it as work. At the same time, ang sarap din ng feeling, kasi you also learn from him, by watching him lang. Natututo ka, parang ah, okay, this is how he works pala. Tapos at the same time, hindi lang fun it’s an honor din.” Danica’s most memorable experience on the 5-year long sitcom is when she had her “debut” in the show. “Kasi hindi ako nag-debut in real life e,” explains this 24-year old. “Never ako nag-debut. So nung nag-debut ako here, parang natuwa ako…parang, uy, at least, di ba?” Danica describes herself as “versatile,” saying that she is not limited to acting. “I don’t stick to acting lang. I like to sing. I like to dance. I like to write. In music, I don’t only sing, I don’t only play the piano, I also play the drums. Tapos parang, kahit saan mo ako ilagay, I can adjust e.” Lately, Danica has been into relaxing music like chill out and Bossa Nova. “But that’s not my type of music. Ewan ko, right now parang I suddenly want to relax.” With all her hard work and future plans, it’s easy to see why Danica would enjoy any down time she can get. -- Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco.
