In a recent episode of iJuander, host and veteran journalist Susan Enriquez invited over journalist Kuya Kim Atienza to the show to uncover the secrets of this so-called limited fruit.
Introducing lipote, scientifically known as syzgium polycephaloides. Studies and research have shown that this fruit can actually help people with diabetes and high blood pressure.
Beatrice Fuentes, a nutritionist, explains, “Lipote fruit also contains linoleic acid. So this type of acid is very beneficial to our body. It also helps with reducing the bad cholesterol sa katawan natin and it also boosts our immunity and enhances our insulin sensitivity. So good ito para sa mga taong may diabetes na it can help lower their risk for worsening their condition.”
Kuya Kim Atienza rode his motorbike to Imelda Sarmiento's house in Quezon City where one of the oldest lipote trees in the Philippines could be found. According to Kuya Kim, lipote is already considered a vulnerable species as it only has less than 1,000 of it in existence.
Imelda shared, “Our house is built in 1954, gave by my dad and my mom. We moved here from San Juan. My parents planted a lot of trees. Namumunga siya during the height of the summer. When you get it really ripe it's sort of matamis but sometimes it's a little sour.”
