We often hear content creators say “comment down below” when encouraging viewers to engage with their videos or online content.
But is the phrase grammatically correct, or is it actually redundant?
Your Honor host Chariz Solomon got the chance to learn more about it after communication consultant Alvin Santos posted a hilarious reaction to her saying the phrase “comment down below.”
In the comment section of Alvin's Instagram Reel, the Bubble Gang comedienne took the correction lightly, writing, “ilovet pasensya na pooooo hahahhaa.”
The social media personality then replied to Madam Cha's comment, saying, “Please, Chariz. Mag-focus tayo sa mga importanteng bagay. Chzzz!”
Previously, educational content creator Lyqa Maravilla uploaded a video explaining why the phrase “comment down below” is considered a redundancy error.
“May mali sa sentence na 'yan. Bakit?” Lyqa said.
“Kasi, one of the common errors, lalo na sa sentence correction questions sa exams, ay 'yung tinatawag nating 'redundancy error.'”
She continued: “Now, ano ba 'yung redundancy error? Ito ay nangyayari kung ang dalawang salita, or combination ng dalawang konsepto na nagde-describe sa isang bagay o pangyayari, ay may parehong kahulugan or meaning.”
“So 'yung sentence na 'comment down below,' dahil ang 'down' ay 'below' din naman, masasabi natin na hindi tamang gamitin ang 'comment down below.' Kaya instead of saying 'comment down below,' mas magandang sabihin mo na lang na 'leave a comment below' or 'comment below.'”
