At six years old, Scarlet Snow Belo is perhaps the most recognizable child star today not seen on any television shows or movies.
The young charmer has managed to build a name for herself, thanks to her adorable videos and photos on social media and product endorsements in between.
But is Scarlet aware that she's already a celebrity with millions of fans and followers?
“Not really, especially now because of the [quarantine restrictions due to the] coronavirus,” said her mom, celebrity doctor Vicki Belo, in a conversation with GMANetwork.com.
Scarlet Snow, according to her mom, has no inkling what a celebrity is nor the perks and expectations that go along with it.
“She doesn't watch TV naman, cartoons lang. Wala siyang idea talaga. Kung minsan lang nagtataka siya when we go out that people wants to take pictures of her or why do people know her name,” Vicki mentioned.
“The only question she asks is, 'Mommy, how come people know my name and they don't know my classmates' name?' Ganun lang, pero wala siyang awareness and we'd like to keep it that way.”
Vicki and her husband, Hayden Kho, want Scarlet to enjoy her childhood and to continuously explore her growing and varied interests.
It helps that Vicki and Hayden are hands-on parents and are intentional in their way of bringing up their daughter.
Intentional parenting is defined as parents making conscious and informed choices for the benefit of their children. It means knowing what qualities and values parents want their kids to develop early on in life, and devoting time and energy to achieve it.
“We really take it seriously what Khalil Gibran said, which is 'your children are not your children… they come through you but not from you,'” shared Vicki.
“We're very intentional not like with two of my other kids [Quark and Cristalle from businessman and Vicki's former husband, Atom Henares]. Although they're very good, I wasn't so intentional in bringing them up.”
She added, “Of course, you want them to be honest, you want them to be good.
"But more than anything, with Scarlet, ang feeling namin kasi she's born to be a leader.
“We want to make sure that if she's a leader in the future that she has proper values and she's God-fearing, she's God-loving para naman she can do something for the country.
“So it's at that level already kahit she's only six years old, talagang nakatutok na kami. Kasi natural 'tong batang to. You can see naman she became a celebrity with no help from us, siya lang mag-isa.
“She seems to attract people, she seems to have love for people, and people love her. So sana this will continue and she will be able to contribute to this country to make it a better country somehow in the future.”
Vicki and Hayden are particularly cautious not to indulge their daughter with material possessions.
“Kunwari ang dami niyang regalong natatanggap, tinatago namin 'yong iba. Parang dahan-dahan lang binibigay sa kanya para hindi siya ma-overwhelmed, hindi siya maging spoiled,” said Vicki.
“That's what we're really guarding against na maging spoiled siya kasi that's going to be so bad for her. We understand that she's going to be disappointed in life so right now she's not materialistic at all. Hindi siya mahilig talaga sa mga material things.”
What Scarlet is fond of are animals--lots and lots of them, from the tame to the wild ones.
“Fearless 'tong batang 'to, e. Humahawak siya kahit na ng python na times four her size,” beamed Vicki.
“Baka 'yon ang kanyang maging [calling], animal conservation. Like we adopted a rhino when we were in Kenya, she wants to help in the [conservation of the] monkey-eating eagles [Philippine Eagle] in the Philippines, marami siyang ganyan so mukhang doon papunta 'yong love niya.”
Scarlet Snow, in fact, has organized a mini club - “Love the Earth club or something” - composed of fellow six and five-year-olds who are into nature and protecting the environment.
“Pero 'di ba 'yong awareness nandun na and we're very happy na she's always trying to help. She's not very about me, me, me, she's always about 'let's save the Earth,' 'yong mga ganun.”
Vicki was frank enough to admit that she envisions Scarlet Snow to take over her beauty empire in the future.
That might change, of course, depending on what Scarlet Snow wants to pursue eventually when she grows up.
“Every time we ask her what she wants to be when she gets older consistent 'yan. Well, when she was one year old, tinuruan 'yan ng dermatologist. But now that she's more aware, since [she was] three years old, veterinarian na kasi gusto niya talaga ng animals,” said Vicki.
“But I always say that she's my succession plan kasi 'yong two older kids ko, one became a director, si Quark, si Cristalle naman businesswoman. So ito na lang pag-asa ko maging doctor.
"So, let's see. I bring her to the clinic, I exposed her. She's a very good dermatologist already. She told nga somebody the other day, 'You know, you need to do a rhinoplasty.' Sabi ko, 'Scarlet!'" laughed Vicki in recollection.
“She'll see a mole or she'll see a pimple, kahit maliit pa na hindi ko nakikita. Maganda ang mata niya.
“Ngayon na may COVID hindi ko siya madala [sa clinic] pero dati lagi kong kasama sa clinic.”
But whether Scarlet Snow pursues veterinary school or wants to follow in her mother's footsteps or fancies doing something else altogether, Vicki and Hayden will be there for sure to support their daughter.
“Ever since she was one or two nakikita mo iba 'tong batang 'to. Napakaganda, of course, napaka-cute. Pero more than anything 'yong puso ni Scarlet napaka-mature,” mused Vicki.
“Naiintindihan niya 'pag I'm feeling bad. She's God's gift to us and I feel God's love for us every time I'm with her kasi talagang she's an amazing child.”
