It was a cold Sunday night. While most of us were resting in the peaceful confines of our homes, Iza Calzado was in a photo shoot for a new movie that is still under wraps. Iza’s statuesque physique and classic features were made for the camera. Wearing a black dress and her usual long straight hair was in a cascade of beautiful waves, she truly is a Queen of the small and big screens. Text by Alula dela Cruz. Photos by Mitch Mauricio Being Mortal Iza is not just beautiful, there’s something about her that captivates you. She gives off an aura that makes you want to know more about her. Her personality is as magical as those of the characters she has played on TV. She is best known for her role as Amihan on Encantadia and more recently as Amaya on Atlantika, fantasy shows that pegged her as an Immortal with super powers. But in reality Iza is as normal as the rest of the herd. During the interview, it was apparent that she was tired, it reflected in her voice. It was obviously a stressful day but her whimsical personality hid all the fatigue. So how does our fair maiden beat stress? Well she goes to the gym, enjoys sitting in the sauna, enjoying steam baths and having massages. During the taping of her now-off-air fantaserye Atlantika she told us that there were people who gave the cast massages in between takes. She playfully remarked, “Minsan yaya ko pag naa-awa”. Iza may be mortal but her beauty is beyond this earthly realm. How does she maintain that look? Could she just be blessed with good genes? Iza confesses that work doesn’t end when the camera stops rolling, beauty also needs work as well. Her nightly routine takes about 15 to 20 minutes. She moisturizes her face, and uses Clarins eye cream and acne drying cream for her t-zone. She also believes in the power of water and fish oil for the skin. Vanity is a part of every woman’s life and Iza is no exception to this rule. Another sinful vanity is shopping. Iza loves to shop! But lately she has been trying to kick the habit. “I’ve come to a point in my life where I’ve realized that I should stop shopping. Kasi, wala siyang nagagawang matino for me”. True to that goal, this minimalist and classic dresser proudly told us that she only shopped once during the entire month of January. The Vegetable Junkie From being chubby to becoming sexy, Iza’s diet revolves around vegetables. She has no definite diet, but favors a good salad as part of her daily meal plan. A Pesco Vegetarian (which means, the practice of not eating red meat but allowing certain type of meats, such as seafood), she fondly told us that even her boyfriend's diet has changed 180 degrees from being a burger lover to a veggie enthusiast. “He wants to be healthy kasi, parang na-iinspire lang siya sa kalokohan ko”. She also prefers Japanese food. “I like tuna sashimi and sushi.” She also loves wasabi “I don’t make sauce I make paste, sobrang konting soysauce”. Because of this lifestyle, her body lacks the recommended daily intake of proteins, so she turns to protein shakes. “I have protein shakes, it’s more of a supplement for me”. Iza and Love Iza is very private about her relationship with her boyfriend Gerry Garcia. We asked her about her recent trip to Europe with Gerry and she never gave out any information. Instead she politely but very firmly closed the subject by saying “Akin na lang yun.” Her perception on love in general is very profound. She shares “I really believe in every interaction you have with every individual, with every life that god has put here on earth there’s love.” She tries to value everything and everyone is this world. Such kind hearted words will truly melt the heart of a none believer. Iza and the Future This A-list celebrity is currently undecided about her future and doesn’t have any concrete plans. “That’s what I’ve been thinking about lately. Siguro quarter life crisis ito or something. I really don’t know until when I’ll be staying here. You’ll never know what the tide might bring.” She recently filmed an independent movie called Mona Escort Service shot mostly in Singapore. “It’s a funny movie about escort services. It was guerilla style, c’mon. Yung camera namin digi-cam, minsan yung reflector namin parang foil. Saka nag sho-shoot kami ng walang permit.” As of press time, Iza is in the middle of filming a movie where she plays against type. Her character is a theater actress and a drama queen. "She’s totally different from the roles I played in the past”. When asked about her inspiration for the role, “Si Catherine Zeta-Jones, sa America's Sweethearts yung pagka primadonna niya doon saka, yung iba hindi ko na sasabihin from real life.” Much more that that neither Iza nor the iGMA team can reveal.
