
Scottish actor Sean Connery, best known for his pioneering role as James Bond, has passed away.
The actor, 90, has died in his sleep in the Bahamas according to a statement released by his family.
The statement also mentioned that the actor had been “unwell for some time.”
Born was born Thomas Sean Connery on August 25, 1930, in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland.
He will be remembered for being the first to bring to life the character of the spy-detective, James Bond, to the big screen.
James Bond is the fictitious character and protagonist in the series of detective novels written by the British journalist Ian Fleming in the '50s.
The last James Bond book written by Fleming to hit shelves was in 1966 with Octopussy and The Living Daylights.
The James Bond character, however, exploded to international recognition when it first hit cinemas in 1962.
Assuming the lead role of the British secret agent was Connery.
Connery appeared in the first five James Bond movies: Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), and You Only Live Twice (1967).
He again took on the role in 1971 and 1983 in Diamonds Are Forever and Never Say Never Again, respectively.
The box-office success of these movies would result in more James Bond film projects in the succeeding years top-billed by a revolving door of actors including Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
In 2012, GMA-7 aired all 22 James Bond movies at the time to mark the film franchise's 50th anniversary.
Connery would go on to create more memorable films including Murder on the Orient Express, Highlander, The Hunt for Red October, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
He was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II on July 5, 2000 for his contribution to film. The ceremony was held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland.
