After more than ten years since her reign, former Binibining Pilipinas beauty queen Janina San Miguel is exposing the dark secrets of the beauty pageant industry that led her to renounce her title just two months before her scheduled international competition.

The once 17-year-old Janina was the center of mass media attention for her gaffe at the question and answer portion of the Binibining Pilipinas pageant held at the Araneta Coliseum in March 2008.

Prior to the segment, she was asked by host Paolo Bediones if she feels any pressure after winning the awards Best in Long Gown and Best in Swimsuit, to which she replied the famous lines, “I don't feel any pressure right now.”

The same cannot be said during the segment proper as the beauty queen lost her composure leading the audience to react with jeers and applause and was then crowned as Binibining Pilipinas World.

On September 30, 2008, Janina announced her resignation for the position stating that the “untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title.”

In an interview for CNA Insider titled “Under Cover Asia: Cost of the Crown,” Janina opened up about her past and described the beauty pageant industry as a world full of indecent practices.

First, she recalls being locked up from the outside world because the organizers think it'd be best for her to focus on the competition.

“Nandun lang ako sa loob ng Araneta [the whole time]. 'Yun lang 'yung pinapanood ko 'yung mga pageants to get some ideas kung paano nanalo 'yung former beauty queens during that time.

“Wala akong phone, wala ring computer--wala akong lahat.”

The rigid standards of being a beauty queen forbade her to meet family members to the point that she wasn't allowed to visit her grandfather who's terribly ill at the hospital.

“There was a point na 'yung kuya ko, pati Daddy ko, nandun na sa labas pero sabi nung guard na since wala silang appointment, umuwi na lang sila.

“Accidentally, narinig ko na 'yung lolo ko nasa hospital na. Balak pa nila, ayaw nilang sabihin na 'yung lolo ko mamatay na beacuse I'm in the middle of training, so ayaw nila na ma-distract ako.”

Janina also revealed that she's received quite a few numbers of indecent proposals during her reign.

“Nung nandun na kami, may nagsabi ng PhP3 million for a one night stand. 'Yung PhP 25 million ano yun gagawin ka niyang girlfriend. Bibigyan ka niya ng car, condo, resort --- lahat,” she said.

“'Yun talaga 'yung maruming kalakaran nila. Marami kasing gusto magkaroon ng girlfriend o wife na isang beauty queen.”

These experiences have led Janine to return her crown and live a normal life away from the limelight.

Upon the advice of her aunt, she scrapped the word “beauty queen” among her list of experiences in her resume.

“Nakuha ko na 'yung experience. But other than that, wala na. To tell you honestly, I was really not happy during that time.

“Much important 'yung family ko rather than fortune and fame.”

Janina has since then become a wife and a mother.

She married her husband, Indian national Vishal Sahota in 2014 and according to CNA, the former beauty queen is now a call center agent for an international company.
