Jessica Soho

Broadcast journalist Jessica Soho marks her 40th year in journalism by launching GMA Public Affairs' Storytellers' Academy, a training ground for young voices committed to telling truthful and meaningful stories.

This September 23 at 2:00 p.m., Cinema 11 in Gateway Mall 2, Araneta City will open its doors to the first batch of participants in GMA Public Affairs' Storytellers' Academy, a groundbreaking initiative led by no less than Jessica Soho herself.

More than just a class or a workshop, the Storytellers' Academy is designed to shape not only skills but also values. Its mission is to guide young voices to understand the responsibility that comes with telling stories that matter. After all, stories do more than entertain, they shape perspectives, influence culture, and even help build a nation. At a time when misinformation spreads faster than facts, the call for fearless, honest, and trusted storytellers has never been louder.

Leading this initiative is one of the country's most respected journalists, Ms. Jessica Soho. From her first assignment as a rookie reporter in 1985, to producing groundbreaking programs such as I-Witness and anchoring the nation's most-watched magazine show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, she has consistently amplified the voices of ordinary Filipinos. Her storytelling has earned international acclaim, including the Philippines' first George Foster Peabody Award, but what truly defines her legacy is how her stories gave light to lives and issues that may have otherwise been overlooked.

Now, in her 40th year in journalism, Jessica is stepping into a new role, as mentor. Through the Storytellers' Academy, she will share the lessons, instincts, and values she has carried throughout her career.

“It's my 40th year as a journalist and I thought that it was time to give back, lalo na sa mga kabataan ngayon na lahat ay content creators o content generators na,” Soho shares.

She further underscores the importance of truth in storytelling: “Sa Storytellers' Academy, gusto kong i-share 'yung nalaman ko, lahat ng na-experience ko, lahat ng lessons learned, gusto ko silang i-mentor. Paano ba maging better storyteller? Importante rin 'yung mga values na natutunan ko bilang isang journalist, katulad ng pagiging fair and responsible, at most especially ang pagiging accurate kasi ang daming maling balita o wrong information na pinapakalat ngayon o fake news. Importante rin malaman kung paano ba 'yung tama. Dito sa Storytellers' Academy I will walk you through what happens behind the scenes.”

The Storytellers' Academy welcomes curious, passionate, and courageous individuals who see storytelling as more than a craft, but a form of service.

For the lucky participants, September 23 marks the start of a journey guided by one of the country's finest storytellers, an opportunity not just to learn how to tell stories, but to learn how to tell the truth.
