Reporter Joseph Morong has some advice on how to recognize and combat fake news. There are practical ways to spot fake news. Unang una, "if it’s really scandalous, the headline. ‘Yun yung tinatawag na clickbait. So parang ‘pag medyo OA na ‘yung, para kang nakakita ng taong nagsisisigaw sa kalye."
He also shares netizens should be wary of odd-looking websites and articles with no author. “Kung it imitates traditional media. So ini-imitate, may mimicking. At sa website for example, if you go to an article, may author ka at may byline. Puwede kang magreklamo. Most of the fake news don’t have that because they don’t want accountability.”
How to tell ‘fact’ from ‘fake’, according to GMA reporter Joseph Morong
One way to avoid being fooled by fake news is to simply have better judgment. “That’s why I think the role is to illustrate how to be discerning. So as far as the lines in fake news are concerned, we don’t need another libel law to tackle it. We just have to be very strong in the journalism aspect."
