New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who starred as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films, has died at the age of 78.
His family announced the news in a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, saying his passing was "sudden and unexpected."
"It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia," the statement read.
The family added that Neill was surrounded by his loved ones and had remained cancer-free at the time of his death.
"The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free," the statement said.
Neill revealed earlier this year that he was cancer-free after undergoing treatment for stage-three blood cancer.
Beyond Jurassic Park, Neill built a decades-long career in film and television, appearing in projects such as The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, The Tudors, and Peaky Blinders.
He was also a winemaker and environmental advocate.
