sogumm

Get to know AOMG artist sogumm and why her unique style is sure to captivate audiences worldwide with her new single “Imagine.”

Most people would associate South Korea with two things: K-pop and K-drama.

While that is all well and good, another genre is taking the world by storm, and that is K-hip-hop--all thanks to the many talented Korean artists.

Riding this wave of popularity is sogumm.

sogumm is a Korean R&B soul artist who began as an independent artist in 2015 but is now currently signed with AOMG, the label behind top trending Korean-American hip-hop and R&B artists like Jay Park (who founded the label), LeeHi, Simon Dominic, GRAY, and Hoody among others. Since then, she has captured her listeners' hearts through her unique style and straight-forward lyrics.

In an exclusive interview with GMA Network, sogumm opens up about the story behind her soulful music and her inspiration on each track.

“I get inspiration from my music through visuals, especially from architecture,” she reveals via an e-mail interview.

“When I make melodies, I imagine that I am painting a picture of a designed space that doesn't look like a regular building. That's why I enjoy seeing paintings and architectures when I am not working on my music so that I can draw inspiration from it.”

Asked how she would describe herself as an artist, sogumm says she's still in the “process of learning how to express myself.”

She adds, “[In the future] I want to create my own band when I get the chance. Wouldn't it be fun to meet people who are in the same boat as you and form a band together?”

Speaking of working with other people, sogumm shares that collaborating with some iconic Korean hip-hop artists like 10CM and HYUKOH has definitely been a “fascinating and unforgettable experience” for her.

She cites, “I enjoyed working with all the artists. There were some whom I couldn't meet in person at all due to a conflict of schedules during the collaboration process.

"However, it surprised me to see that they understood my intentions through my lyrics and the song's mood.

“We were able to understand one another through music.”

And finally, if there's any advice she'd give to aspiring musicians like her who'd like to break barriers in the music industry, the Korean artist says it's important to believe in oneself.

She says, “I didn't have a clear vision of the kind of music I wanted to pursue at the beginning of my career, and my vision often wavered with what other people told me.

"I thought I was doing something wrong and tried to fix it when people asked, 'Why do you pronounce words like that?' or 'Why do you groove like that?'

“However, I felt as if I was losing a part of myself when I fixed those so-called 'mistakes' one by one.

“So, I want to tell aspiring musicians to focus on themselves and believe in themselves instead of trying to fix everything by listening to other people's opinions. Protecting your own identity will make you unique.

“In the end, there is only one person that is you!”

sogumm just released her newest single, “Imagine,” featuring Hoody in collaboration with DJ Wegun.

According to reports, this is third time sogumm and DJ Wegun have collaborated, raising more anticipation from fans as it showed a different vibe from their previous works.
