He is the man behind some of the biggest drama shows of GMA-7. Despite the numerous accolades he received for hit shows like My Husband’s Lover and the recently concluded Hiram na Alaala, the phenomenal director Dominic Zapata admits that doing drama projects is physically and emotionally demanding.

According to Direk Dominic, shooting drama is toxic and he really puts his mind and soul into it.

“Doing soaps sobrang toxic! Ang bigat! As a director, the way I direct is when I do a scene, when it’s a crying scene I have to be crying also. Not literally but I should be able to feel it. So kapag puro ganun ‘yung eksenang ginagawa ko bumibigat.”

He revealed that one way he is able to recharge himself from the hectic environment is through directing comedy shows like Ismol Family.

Zapata added that he even personally asked the GMA-7 management if he could do comedy aside from drama shows.

“Sabi ko [sa GMA] puwede po ba bigyan niyo pa rin ako ng comedy because it’s a kind of therapy for me also. It’s a break from those dramas we do. You know I love doing that kind of stuff but I have to keep myself sane as well. So, I feel that ‘yung comedy does that for me. It kinda fixes me and grounds me.”

The brilliant director quipped that Ismol Family has a special place in his heart and that he's a comedian by nature.

“And kasi 'yun talaga ‘yung personality ko. I think comedy really is my personality. It’s second nature to me so I feel like I’m right in my element when I’m doing comedies.”
