Did you know that there were instances when Kara David would ride her bicycle from her home in Antipolo to get to work in GMA Network before it was a fad?

One of the many things that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to do is look for alternative ways to go to and from work without the hassle of taking public transformation because of fear of getting the virus.

Here comes bicycle riding, a low-impact aerobic exercise that not only helps you get to your destination safely but also offers a wealth of benefits.

Besides enhancing your fitness level and well-being, it can also serve as your mode of transport, a casual activity, or a competitive endeavor.

In an interview with cycling coach Danny Cordero, he said that cycling is a wonderful workout that keeps you active and can help shape a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally.

He explains in Pinoy MD, “Sa pagbibisikleta natin, maari tayong makasunog o burn ng up to 1000 calories or more depende sa edad ng indibidwal at amount na tinatawag nating lean muscles.

“Kasi ang lean muscles ang nagsusunog ng fats. At also depende rin sa intensity o hirap ng pagbibisikleta.”

Unlike most of us who only got into cycling during the pandemic, Kapuso news anchor Kara David incorporated the activity almost seven years ago.

She shared with the GMA Public Affairs program, “Alam n'yo mga Kapuso, matagal na akong nagbibisikleta.

“Siguro mga more than 7 years na kasi I want to be healthy, I want to be fit, and gusto ko rin makatipid sa pamasahe. Minsan kasi hindi na ako nagko-kotse so para makaiwas sa traffic, nagbibisikleta ako mula Antipolo hanggang sa GMA.

“Siguro mga one-way is mga 10 to 12 kilometers.”

Kara shares that one of the many things she loves about the activity is strengthening her heart and lungs, thus leading to effective weight loss.

“Gumaganda na 'yung puso mo, nagiging healthy ka pa, at mas nagiging fit ka pa. Tapos, nakakagala ka pa kung saan-saan at nakakalibot kaya masaya!”

She then quipped, “Pero laging tandaan, safety first!”

One of the many tips Kara shared for a safe commute via cycling is to stick to your lane and keep your distance from large vehicles.

“'Pag kayo nagbibisikleta sa kalye, make sure to stay on your lane,” she said.

“Lalo na kung may bike lanes, dun lang kayo. 'Wag kayong pasikot-sikot kasi ang mga kotse may mga blind spot at baka hindi kayo makita.

“So, to be on the safer side, stick to your lane and kung may bike lane, stay on the bike lane.”

Meanwhile, Coach Danny offered his advice for newbies who'd want to get into cycling as a way to live a healthier lifestyle this 2021.

He said, “Kung bibiglain mo 'yan, tulad ng ibang bagay, ay nakakasama sa'yo.

“So, make sure you ride your bicycle, gradually, slowly, and enjoy the ride. A conversational pace is a good start to ride a bicycle. Ibig sabihin, nakakapagsalita ka habang nagbibisikleta ka.”
