In a recent episode of Pinas Sarap, host Kara David visited the Igorot Stone Kingdom in Baguio.
Made of riprap, the Igorot Stone Kingdom showcases the impeccable talent of the Igorots in terms of building and stacking boulders together to create towering walls.
The Igorot Stone Kingdom goes by the famous legend in the Cordillera Region saying that back in time there really was an Igorot Kingdom existing.
On her adventure at the stone kingdom, Kara met with Pio Velasco, a proud Igorot and the owner of the tourist attraction.
Pio said that the Igorot Stone Kingdom, surrounded by Igorot-made riprap, was created to introduce the rich culture of the Igorots as well as their skills, which are often overlooked by people.
“We the Igorots, parang nadi-discriminate kami. Portraying us as ignorant people that we are taga bundok, uncivilized, parang wala kaming alam sa mundo. Meron po kaming civilization and we are sharing it now,” he shares.
Pio further explains, “Itong riprap or stone laying is the science of interlocking stones, parang jigsaw puzzle po 'yan na pinag-lock namin. Ang original na riprap walang cement. For purposes of public safety, nilagyan namin ng cement in between (the boulders) kasi Baguio is prone to Earthquakes so we had to put in some binders.”
The ripraps made by the Igorots do not only pave the way for other cultures to learn about them but also to strengthen their mountains.
