A more mature voice and point of view can be expected from Kyla’s new album, ‘Journey’. It indeed chronicles the highs and lows of her life as the songs in it reveal her innermost thoughts and feelings during the monumental events in her personal life and career.
The song ‘My Heart’ was a gift from American singer-songwriter Brian McKnight. “It was a duet with Brian McKnight. He wrote that song and gave it to me two years ago before I got married. So it was like a wedding gift,” she said.
Kyla shared that all the songs were inspired by key events in her life. “Yung ‘Journey’, I wrote that on (my and Rich’s) honeymoon in Europe and yung ‘I Got This’, it’s about (struggling) a little bit because there are a lot of artists coming out, so syempre, we all struggle rin so we have to keep working hard kaya nasulat ko din siya,” Kyla added.
The all-original album is a lot deeper than her previous ones. “Mas nag-grow na ako as a musician and an individual. ‘Journey’ has more maturity since I’ve been through a lot already in my personal life and my career and parang lahat ng emotions that I’ve been through, parang nailagay ko na siya dito in this album,” she noted.
Writing and recording were also fun because she got to work with her friends.
“I called Yosha Honasan who is a great, great vocalist and a great musician so I asked her [to help me] and then for ‘Journey’, I called Jay-R to do the melody with me kasi meron na akong words,” she shared. “It was a long process but it was fun. I was working with my friends… I’m really proud of this album kasi all the songs are really nice and we put a lot of effort and hard work in it.”
