Lay Zhang

For Filipino XBACKs and EXO-Ls, Lay Zhang was worth the decade-long wait.

Lay is finally back!

After a decade since his last performance in the Philippines, Lay Zhang, a multifaceted Chinese artist known for his myriad of talents, has returned to the Manila stage. This event marks his return to the Philippines after 10 years since he performed at the Dream Kpop Fantasy Concert in January 2013 with EXO.

Lay rose to fame in 2012 when he debuted as a member of the globally renowned K-pop group EXO before launching a solo career. He is currently a solo artist and the founder and CEO of Chromosome Entertainment Group. His return signifies not just a comeback but a celebration of growth and an enduring connection with his Filipino XBACKs and EXO-Ls.

This special event, which happened last Monday, December 4, at Teatrino Promenade in Greenhills and organized by Warner Music Philippines, is a treat for the lucky fans with exclusive invitations. Lay's return meant more than just music: it was a reunion, a celebration of his journey with fans, promising more memorable moments ahead. The Philippines was also the first stop for his series of fan meetings.

After ten long years of waiting, Pinoy fans were overjoyed when Lay finally stepped onto the stage, prompting a burst of screams from the ecstatic crowd.

Lay opened the event by performing the slow version of his songs “Boom” and “Right Back” while playing the keyboard. When asked about his choice of songs for his performance, he said that he wanted to sing the slow version of 'Boom' because of the intimate theme of the event, and as for the other song, “Right now, I'm here, I'm back. That's why I chose 'Right Back.' Just like the lyrics said: I am always here if you want,” he quipped.

He greeted his beloved XBACKs and EXO-Ls in Filipino saying, “Kumusta, Philippines! Ako si Lay!” (How are you, Philippines! I am Lay!). His fans began shouting the Pinoy word “Pogi! Pogi! Pogi!” (Handsome) and he then answered them back with the Filipino words “Maganda kayo!” (You are beautiful!).

There was also a light-hearted segment where Lay gamely answered a few questions which revealed his humorous side and genuine connection with his fans. From expressing his desire to visit the Philippines more often to hinting at future collaborations with Filipino artists, Lay's responses resonated with gratitude and warmth.

The afternoon gathering seamlessly transformed into an exclusive listening party. Lay shared snippets of two of his upcoming songs “Psychic” and “Step,” making his Filipino fans the privileged first audience to experience these musical gems.

Lay was touched when the crowd began singing the chorus of “Right Back” as a surprise for him. Apologizing for not visiting more often, he made a heartfelt promise to return in 2024 with his much-anticipated Grandline tour.

When the host said that it was time to wrap up the event, the fans exclaimed “Walang uuwi!” (No one is going home). In response, Lay humorously suggested, “We sleep together?” adding a playful and delightful touch to the afternoon.

As Lay bid farewell, he said, “Keep healthy and stay with me, jumping with me until the end.” With that, the crowd cried, cheered, and lifted their banners with a message saying “You are worth the wait.”
