Lay Zhang West

Lay Zhang shares how he created his new EP 'West' and which two songs are his favorite.

Global superstar Lay Zhang recently released his new EP West which is composed of five new songs, including the lead single "Veil."

While taking a break in Bangkok after staging his successful second concert tour Grand Line 2: Infinite Lands, Lay sat down for a virtual interview with select members of the Philippine press, including GMANetwork.com.

Lay candidly shared how his new EP West was created.

"West is a continuation of my EP East. It's about the journey to the west and the mystery around it. There are challenges that we face along the journey that people can relate to in their everyday life," he shared.

The theme might seem a bit heavy-handed but he assured that fans will have a fun time listening to it.

"Each album is important to me. They are like my children. This one is about having fun vibes while telling my truth," he said.

Lay also revealed his two favorite songs from the five-track EP.

"My favorite track is 'Understand' and 'Veil.' 'Understand' has a very chill vibe and a sad love story. 'Veil' is [asking listeners to] be more real. Take off your mask and show me the real you," he explained.

"Veil" is the EP's lead single and features sounds from a traditional instrument called an erhu as well as exciting electronic beats.

"When people listen to this song, we can dance together. If you listen to this song, it can make your mood happier," the singer enthused.

Lay also released the song in Mandarin and English versions.

"As a Chinese person, Chinese comes easier to me but I also want more people to know what I'm singing about so [I released an] English version as well," he shared.

The song is also accompanied by a stunning music video that combines eastern and western elements. According to Lay, it is always important for him to reflect his culture in his work.

"My culture is who I am, my background. I'm a proud Chinese person first before an artist. I just want to share the good things about my culture. I hope it inspires others to do the same," he said.

Aside from "Veil" and "Understand," West also includes a song called "3 Wishes" which is about selfless love and dedication between lovers, and "I Don't Care" which takes a stand against cyberbullying.
