Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses recently battered most of Luzon, leaving extensive damages to properties and have claimed the lives of some Filipinos.
So, as the country anticipates more typhoons to come in until the first quarter of 2021, people need to be forearmed.
Aside from making sure that your home is typhoon-proof, stocking up on essential foods and drinks is a must.
So that in the event that no one can leave the house due to flooding or strong winds, you and your loved ones will still have enough food and drinks.
Be typhoon-ready and fill your pantry with the foods and drinks listed below.
1. Bottled water
It has been said that humans can go 30 to 40 days without any food, as long as they keep hydrated. However, humans can't go longer than three days without water. So, stocking up on bottled water is actually a bit more important than food.
2. Canned meats and seafood
Although canned meats and seafood are already pantry staples in most Filipino households, it's still best to stock up on more of them when a storm or typhoon is approaching.
3. Canned soups
Canned soups are also good to have in your pantry. Make sure you also buy ready-to-eat soups aside from the ready-to-cook and microwaveable ones, just in case you can't cook due to power outages or you ran out of LPG.
4. Canned fruits and veggies
Filipinos naturally prefer fresh fruits and vegetables, but it's good to have canned produce as a substitute for fresh ones, just in case you can't leave the house to replenish your stock.
5. Dried fruits
Another possible substitute for fresh fruits is the dried variety. However, it should be consumed in moderation to prevent dehydration as it has high sugar and calorie contents.
6. Sports drinks
Sports drinks are known to have electrolytes and carbohydrates that can help you stay hydrated and energized.
7. Powdered milk
Having powdered milk in the pantry is a good idea, just in case the fresh milk in your fridge goes bad when there's no power supply.
8. Protein bars
Packed with protein and carbohydrates, protein bars can give you more energy without having to consume that much food. Perfect to have in your pantry, just in case you run out of other foods.
9. Nuts
Most types of nuts can last up to a year without spoiling, so it's an ideal pantry staple. It is also a great source of protein, fat and fiber.
10. Fresh fruits
That's right. There are fresh fruits that can last for a week or even months. Without refrigeration, unripe and firm avocados can last for up to a week, while oranges and grapefruits can last up to two weeks. Apples can last up to three months if stored in a cool, dry place, away from other perishable fruits like bananas.
Be sure to add these to your grocery cart next time so you'll be ready when the next typhoon arrives. Stay safe, mga Kapuso!
