The greatest tragedy of prematurely losing our music heroes is that we won't be able to hear new songs from them again.
Fans are left wondering what these artists might have created had they lived long enough to create more music.
An AI (artificial intelligence) program called Magenta AI by Google, however, will change all that - or at least tries to.
A project titled Lost Tapes of the 27 Club by the Toronto-based non-profit organization Over The Bridge utilized the said AI technology to create new music by dead music legends such as Kurt Cobain of the grunge band Nirvana, guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix, English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, and the Jim Morrison-fronted rock band The Doors.
The project aims to raise awareness of mental health issues in the music business.
All mentioned artists are part of the so-called The 27 Club or music artists who passed away at the young age of 27.
The new songs, namely, 'Drowned in the Sun' (Nirvana), 'Man, I Know' (Amy Winehouse), 'The Roads Are Alive' (The Doors), and 'You're Gonna Kill Me' (Jimi Hendrix), were all created using the AI software.
Magenta AI analyzed the previous works of these artists and used the information gathered to compose songs based on how the artists would create one. Another AI software was tapped to come up with the lyrics.
“What if all these musicians that we love had mental health support?” asked Sean O' Connor from Over The Bridge during a chat with Rolling Stone.
“Somehow in the music industry, [depression] is romanticized. Their music is seen as authentic suffering.”
