Admit it! Sometimes, we all need a little cosmetic help—even the guys. And Janno Gibbs was man enough to show iGMA his tricks of the trade, or how to look good on cam. Makeup can be macho, too. Let Janno show you how! Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio and Connie M. Tungul. We visited Janno Gibbs during one of his video shoots and caught him putting on his own makeup. We were surprised, but for the King of Soul, this is no biggie. He is used to putting his game face on for gigs and shows. He also says that, at the very least, men should know what looks good on them. stars “Through the years nalaman ko na kung ano iyong bagay sa akin. Actually doon nag-umpisa iyong why I learned to do my own makeup,” he says with no-nonsense aplomb. Few men can deliver such lines while still maintaining their playboy image. But then again, we’re talking about a real man here, a man hardened by the tough world of showbiz. “Kasi normally hindi ako nasa-satisfy sa gawa ng iba. It looks too made-up,” Janno says. He explains that the main thing to do is to look natural. Not that he claims to know more than professional makeup artists, but the common problem, according to him is, “some of the badings, [are] used to doing women.” Skin Talk Again, only a real man has the guts to admit that he needs help. Janno reveals that he does not have perfect skin: “So extra effort. I always go to the derma, kay Vicki Belo.” He learned to accept dermatological advice after he watched other men in his line of work. This is because whenever he watched local soaps and shows, he noticed one thing. “Marami sa mga guys natin, ano, hindi nagme-makeup. Feeling nila ang ganda-ganda ng skin nila,” he says with a conspiratorial whisper. stars Sadly, his observation is true. Many of our local actors think that they are either too manly or too handsome for a little foundation. But we, the audience, are all too painfully aware that this is not usually the case. “At least iyong mga flaws 'di ba? Medyo sa iba lumalabas na lalim ng mata, iyong ganun. Ayaw man lang takpan, 'di ba?” Janno says. This may sound harsh but, hey, this is as honest as one can get. One more thing that annoys the heck out of him is when men do use a facial base—when the color of the face is different from the neck down. “Panget 'di ba? 'Di ba parang nagfo-float iyong ulo. So, match your skin tone. That’s the most important.” But don’t get him wrong. Janno is not being an all-knowing alpha male. He just knows his flaws and advises people to acknowledge theirs, too. He shares, “Hindi ba? Kahit gwapo ka! Eh, ako kailangan double effort!” That was way too humble for the King of Soul because with or without makeup, we know that Janno is hot.
