Maria Clara at Ibarra costumes

"I think the designs overall are pretty good. They are wearing trajes de mestizas which was the usual dress of a native woman at that time and place--in lowland, Christianized parts of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era," panimula niya.

"The trajes de mestizas has four components--the baro or the blouse, the saya or the skirt, the tapis or the overskirt, and the panuelo which is the triangular shawl," aniya.

"Their panuelos were very high which was very popular at that time. They actually achieved that by using cornstarch and starching their dress to make it seem very stiff and regal," lahad niya.

"The material of their blouses is a nipis fabric--probably piña which is a Philippine textile made from pineapples so it was very expensive. Maria Clara is from a wealthy family so it shows her character as well," bahagi ni Maranan.

"I definitely know that the people in this show really did their research and had fun with it and were really excited to share all of the cool things about the dress during this time," sambit niya.

"I give it the rating 'It gets the job done.' Very good," dagdag pa ni Maranan.

An evolution of the Philippine national dress in photographs 1860-1960" nina Gino Gonzales at Mark Lewis Higgins.
