
Mariah Carey's mother, Patricia Carey, and sister, Alison Carey, passed away on the same day recently, the singer confirmed with PEOPLE.
In an exclusive statement shared with PEOPLE, Mariah opened up about her mother and sister's passing.
"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the Grammy-winning singer, 55, said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.
"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," adds Mariah. "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

According to reports, Patricia was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah's father.
She was an opera singer educated at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Patricia and Alfred divorced when Mariah was three years old.
Meanwhile, Times Union reported Alison was in her Greene County home in Ohio when she passed away. She was 63 years old.
The causes of their death have not yet been disclosed.
According to the pop star's memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she had a complicated relationship with her mother, but they remained present in each other's lives.
Among their mother-and-daughter public appearances was their duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for the “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” in 2010.
