Are Filipino audiences ready for the new twists and angles that the local version of Mari Mar has in store for them?
With Mari Mar’s arrival on Philippine shores, audiences are ready to watch their beloved heroine surpass obstacles and win the heart of the man she loves. But are they ready for the new twists and angles that the local version has in store for them?
Are Filipino viewers ready to meet the new Mari Mar? Text by Alula Love M. Dela Cruz. Photos provided by GMA Network.
We have all heard and probably watched the Mexican tele-novela,
MariMar which starred Latina actress Thalia. For most of us this was one of those “drop everything that we were doing” moment and for thirty minutes we become a part of this estrange girl’s rags to riches life. We are hooked on every moment, every scene till the last episode. Now she’s making a comeback in the form of GMA’s next big star
Marian Rivera. With her ultra-feminine looks and her amazing talent, almost everyone is betting that this version will top its Mexican predecessor. But along with the positive expectations comes the negative questions. One of those is how this local remake is going to be different from the Mexican version?

“Hindi sobrang detalye ng Marimar yung gagawin namin, medyo may ibang twist siya, kasi medyo light lang yung Marimar na napapanood noon” says Marian Rivera in a recent interview. Direk Joyce Bernal adds, “Mas younger yung look with a younger cast”.
Aside from a younger cast, they’re also changing the setting, from the original Mexican ranch to a beach resort in Zambales.
Another major change is the story itself. According to
Dingdong Dantes (Sergio Santibañez), this version remains truthful to the original story of innocence, love and revenge, “Kwento (siya) ng pamilya. Yung mga basics at yung poste ng show di matatanggal yun. Iba lang ang setting, iba iba na ang pangalan (at) nadagdagan ng characters.”
They’re also adding a back story to each of the characters, “Yung background mas malalim, si Sergio galing America, sumali ako sa isang racing team, andun pa din yung galit niya sa Ama niya.” The reason for the feud between the Sergio and his father Renato Santibañez (
Richard Gomez) is still Angelika (
Katrina Halili) who happens to be the wife of who is the patriarch of the Santibañez clan, but this time Katrina reveals “May past si Angelika at Sergio.”
It gets juicier! Angelika’s back story is more than just a love triangle. She is also related to our heroine. Kat explains by saying “magkaibigan sila ni Mari Mar nung bata pa sila, may nangyari sa kanila kaya ganoon siya (kasama) kay Mari Mar.” Kat refuses to divulge the root of Angelika’s angst; we just have to watch the show to find out.
Almost all of our favorite characters are still part of this local version, Padre Porres (Buboy Garovillo), Corazon (
Manilyn Reynes) and Fulgoso (Nigel) will still play an important part in Mari Mar’s life. So be sure to never miss an episode of
Mari Mar on GMA’s telebabad.
