Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many creative ways to help disadvantaged people have cropped up all over social media.
One of which is Guhit Pantawid: Portraits for a Cause where a person will receive a customized portrait after making a donation of at least P500.
Frances Lim Cabatuando, co-project head of Guhit Pantawid: Portraits for a Cause
New Normal: The Survival Guide series Newsmakers host Winnie Monsod remotely interviewed some of the people behind the project, including Kapuso actor Tom Rodriguez.
According to Tom, it was actually his girlfriend and fellow Kapuso star Carla Abellana who gave him the idea to join the project.
He messaged Guhit Pantawid: Portraits for a Cause for a possible collaboration and soon joined the project's second batch of artists.
"Carla put it in a proper perspective.
"My artwork was more of a token of thanks. Since Guhit Pantawid is directly sent to the bank accounts of the person that they're directly helping--they choose from a list of recipients--so my customized artwork for them is sort of a token. It's a gesture of thanks," Tom explains.
Frances Lim Cabatuando, co-project head of Guhit Pantawid: Portraits for a Cause explained how their project works.
"Guhit Pantawid is literally what its name is. Guhit, magdo-drawing kami to raise funds para may pantawid sa mga daily wage earners.
"Sila 'yung mga drivers, kunduktor, street vendors, construction workers and other related industries to that," she shares.
She also explained that the donations are sent directly to the beneficiary.
"The mechanics of Guhit Pantwid is pretty simple. We will draw a portrait for every donation you give to our daily wage earners. Hindi dumadaan sa aming team 'yung pera at all. What happens is, a donor will donate at least P500 to his beneficiary of choice," she says.
Frances is grateful for the participation of Tom as he gave the project a much needed signal boost.
"When Tom messaged, he said he wanted to participate in a way na siya 'yung magdo-drawing, sobrang natuwa kami. Ang galing pala niya! Hindi namin alam na he drew that well.
"We're really thankful for Tom's pariticpation. He's very crucial for us to reach the amount that we raised. 'Yung tulong, napaabot talaga namin sa mga nanganganilangan," she recounts.
