The Met Gala 2020 is officially postponed due to the pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.
Vogue editor-in-chief and Met Gala chairman Anna Wintour wrote a letter on March 16 where she addressed the postponement of the gala's opening night which was originally scheduled on May 4.
“One day that will not arrive on schedule will be the opening of the Costume Institute's exhibition, About Time. Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled,” she said.
On March 12, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the annual gala always takes place, decided to temporarily close the doors of its three locations to visitors due to the coronavirus outbreak.
According to the statement, “We will be closing all three locations--The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters--temporarily starting tomorrow, March 13, to support New York City's effort to contain the spread of COVID-19.
“The Museum will undertake a thorough cleaning and plans to announce next steps early next week.”
Nevertheless, Wintour promised a preview of the About Time exhibition in Vogue's May issue.
“In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue,” she said at the end of the letter.
