Despite the intense competition, the Miss Universe pageant is also a place where lasting friendships are built among some of the candidates.
This seems to be the case with Japan's bet Aisha Harumi Tochigi and Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo.
In an Instagram post, Aisha wrote a touching letter to Rabiya expressing how much she missed the Ilongga beauty queen now that the pageant has wrapped up.
“I feel weird when I come back to the room and I don't see you. I miss your morning song, rap, dance and I miss our late night chitchatting,” Aisha reminisced about her time with Rabiya.
“Thank you so much for always making me laugh. You are the best roommate I could ever ask for! Love you so much babe!!!”
Rabiya saw the message and replied by leaving a comment on Aisha's post.
“Why are you like that? You are making me cry. I love you so much. You saw me at my lowest point in the competition but you were also there helping me get through everything,” said Rabiya.
The Philippines' bet ended her message by writing “mahal and mahal kita!” and inviting Aisha to visit the country soon.
The 69th Miss Universe pageant was held last May 17 (Philippine time) at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, United States.
Rabiya concluded her campaign by making it to the Top 21 but failed to advance to the Top 10.
Andrea Meza from Mexico eventually won the crown to succeed Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa.
“It was such a beautiful moment to represent you, Philippines. I am forever honored to be part of the legacy, of our history,” Rabiya wrote on Instagram less than 24 hours after the pageant ended.
“I made a lot of sacrifices people can't sometimes see. Early call time. Late-night rest. Trying to be sane and motivated. It was a challenge but it made me so much stronger every day.”
“Salamat mga kababayan! Mahal ko kayo!”
