In a social media post, Noel released a statement emphasizing that the MMFF Executive Committee has not released any data regarding the ticket grosses and the box office rankings of the eight film entries for this year.
He also emphasized that the non-disclosure of official rankings is a strategic decision made in coordination with the film producers.
According to Noel, the primary reason for withholding official numbers is to prevent the “bandwagon effect” where audiences will only patronize those top-ranking films, neglecting those high-quality entries who haven't earned a huge traction.
“TO SET THE RECORDS STRAIGHT: The MMFF Executive Committee refrains from disclosing official rankings and box office grosses, as per our agreement with the producers,” Noel wrote in his post.
“In order to mitigate the bandwagon effect that may potentially impact the performance of our entries,” he continued.
For Noel, by keeping the numbers private, there is a fair chance for the eight film entries to find its audience based on merit and word-of-mouth rather than just sales.
In spite of this, he is calling on the public to appreciate, experience, and support every film participating in this year's MMFF.
“We encourage the public to experience and support ALL THE FILMS showcased in this year's MMFF, thereby demonstrating your unwavering love and appreciation for the Philippine film industry,” Noel said.
He concluded his statement by inviting audiences to show their love and support for Philippine cinema in theaters as the holiday season continues: “Since we're still in a long holiday, we eagerly await your presence in our cinemas.”
The 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival, which includes film entries like I'm Perfect, UnMarry, Call Me Mother, Manila's Finest, Bar Boys: After School, Love You So Bad, Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins, and Rekonek, continues its theatrical run until January 7, 2026, with potential extensions in designated cinemas.
