Asian Treasures has given us one of the most intriguing and most fully-realized cast of characters since it began airing. When two of its supporting characters were catapulted into primary character status, it only meant one thing - more fun for the cast and audiences alike. Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. stars The scene may be familiar to avid viewers of Asian Treasures: Gabriela, played by Angel Locsin, is traipsing through trees as she searches for an anting-anting. What’s different in the scene though is that instead of Elias (Robin Padilla), Mateo (Marky Cielo) or Pogi (Iking Magundayao), Gabriela is accompanied by Hector (Marvin Agustin), Cedric (Gio Alvarez) and Ingrid (Diana Zubiri). Hector has been a major character from the beginning, and now it’s time for the others to shine. In this two-part series, read about how these actors and their corresponding roles are moving up in the world to spotlight status. Cedric, the Geeky sidekick In the beginning, Cedric was included mostly for comic relief. He played the co-worker who is hopelessly in love with Gabriela, the mysterious girl at the office.Somewhere along the way though, Cedric finds out about Gabriela’s secret and becomes part of her team. Whereas before, he was always placed in front of a computer looking at Gabriela from afar, Gio’s character now travels on the missions as well. Gio admits that he is excited about this new development in his character. The Charming Gio describes the working experience with Asian Treasures in one word: masarap. Cedric is one of the most brilliant portrayals on television today. Gio reveals that Cedric is easy to play because the character is very close to who Gio is in real life. “Kasi ‘di ba ‘yung show business ganoon? Siyempre ang nangyayare sa school, tinutukso ka. Madalas ang ending nag-iisa ka. Ang pinaka pinag prepare-an kong talagang todo (ay) ‘yung mga dialogues. Because ngayon lang uli ako gumamit ng dialogue na sobrang lalim.” He also adds that like the other roles he played, “Cedric is something different from what I usually do, pero character acting pa rin. Pero now, syempre may action, may friction so this is something different talaga.”stars Gio thinks that Cedric is an important part of the team, “Hindi naman sa nag-aangat ng bangko or whatever, pero if I’m in the scene it becomes... hindi naman light, pero it becomes (less tense).” As Asian Treasures continues to weave its intricate web of mysteries and subplots, viewers also continue to wait for what’s coming next in the series. “Abangan nila ako dahil astig ako eh,” Gio jokes. A bit more seriously, he adds, “Siguro people should watch out for combining old na ‘no, plus ‘yung mga clues to solve.” Look for more of Cedric as he plays a bigger role in the hunt for the Asian Treasures, weeknights only on GMA. And watch out for the next feature on Diana Zubiri's feisty portrayal of Ingrid. Talk about the show, Diana and Gio at the iGMA.tv forums!
