It truly is pageant season as pageant fans and aficionados have another competition to look forward to as Mr. and Ms. Chinatown Philippines (MMCP) has announced 20 young Chinoys and Chinays competing for this year's crowns.
In a statement distributed to media, pageant organizers revealed that 10 male and female contestants, known as GenXins, will be competing for the Mr. and Ms. Chinatown Philippines titles. The pageant, co-organized by ChiNOY TV, came up with the GenXins moniker by combining two words from two different languages.
“GenXin originated from Generation and Xin, which means 'new', so we coined this word to depict the next generation Chinoys,” shared CHiNOY TV President, Alvin Kingson Tan. “With the candidates being mostly from the Gen-Z generation, we are utilizing MMCP as a platform for GenXins to share their ideas, improve themselves, but more than anything, for them to be appreciative of their Chinoy roots.”
Meanwhile, MMCP pageant director Mikko Araneta says that as the pageant is now in its 10th year, it is seeking to “broaden its vision and contribution.”
“I think we are trying to redefine what pageantry means in this time and age. Aside from the gloss and spectacle, it really is about the contestant's journey and what meaning they can draw out of it, when the contest is done,” he said.
The pageant has begun doing that since last year, after it included an out member of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and others) community in the competition. Last year's second runner-up Vince Aseron identifies as an “androgynous femme presenting nonbinary.”
Winners of this year's competition will be succeeding Kevin Lao and Berjayneth Chee, who won last year's pageant. The coronation night will be held at the Newport World Resorts Manila on November 19.
Another pageant set to have its coronation night in the same week is the Miss Universe pageant, which is going to be held in El Salvador on November 18 (El Salvador time) at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador. Current reigning Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee has already arrived in El Salvador and has been snapped having fun with two other candidates during the sash ceremony. Current reigning Miss Universe R'Bonney Gabriel is set to crown her successor at the pageant.
With just a little over two weeks before the coronation night, Michelle has previously shared that she is ready to give “200 percent” in winning the crown.
Michelle already teased her preparations for the pageant back in August in an interview with Unang Balita, where she shared her excitement for the Miss Universe coronation night and how the Miss Universe Philippines team are polishing her performance for the pageant.
