Nas Academy said that Kalinga tattoo artist Whang-od and her family have direct knowledge of the virtual course that was offered to the public.
In a statement, the online learning platform denied exploiting Whang-od and the time-honored Kalinga culture contrary to accusations from netizens.
The grandniece of Whang-od, Gracia Palicas, called Nas Academy and its online course titled “Learn the Ancient Art of Tattooing” a scam, saying that it didn't have the consent of the tattoo artist herself.
“We approached Whang-od because just like you, we love her. We love her traditions, and are inspired by her. We wanted to share her culture for future generations to appreciate and respect the ancient Kalinga tradition of mambabatok. So we pitched her family the idea of creating Whang-Od Academy,” said Nas Academy in a statement.
Whang-od and her family, added the statement, “loved this idea” and agreed to work on the project “with Whang-od teaching herself.”
It further added, “As a matter of fact, Whang-Od's trusted niece, Estella Palangdao, was present and translated the content of the contract prior to Whang-Od affixing her thumbprint, signifying her full consent to the project.”
The post came with a video of the said meeting with Whang-od present and being assisted by a relative and representative from the online platform.
“This is the clearest evidence that it is not a scam and achieved the consent of her and her immediate family.”
Nas Academy said that everyone involved with the project were compensated and earnings were shared with the 104-year-old tattoo artist and her family.
The course was temporarily taken down “out of respect” to Whang-od and her family and while the platform resolves the issue.
“We care deeply about the Philippines and respect the many cultures and traditions that exist across the country. And we have all come together to make the world a better place.”
