Princess Diana

The streaming giant is said to release 'Diana: The Musical' on its platform come October 2021.

After much speculation, streaming site Netflix has finally aired its plans to broadcast the rumored Diana: The Musical on its platform.

According to reports, the Broadway musical thought of migrating to Netflix to promote the project and will have its formal opening on stage on December 16, 2021.

Its video version, however, will air on Netflix months earlier with October 1 as its air date.

In a statement, the company said, “The chance to share our show, first with Netflix's global audience, and then welcoming a live audience back on Broadway is something we've all been dreaming about for more than a year.

“Though there is no substitute for the live theatre, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.

“We could not be more thrilled to finally share both the film and the Broadway musical with the world.”

Broadway theatres have closed their doors in Mid-March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and have extended their closure until June 2021. However, with the vaccination in progress, they're eyeing to formally open their doors in September for live musicals to get the industry back and running.

Because live theatre thrives on close contacts between actors, their crew, and needs a large audience to survive financially, they are expected to be the last cultural event to return after the pandemic.

Diana: The Musical will follow a fictional take on the late Princess Diana's life, which will include a few scenes of her marriage and breakdown with Prince Charles.

A few reports have cited that there are a number of controversial scenes, including one in which the Queen, played by theatre icon Judy Kaye telling Diana, “In the old days, we would have chopped your head.”

Rumors have also circulated that the show will depict scenes of self-harm and exhibit a moment of Diana in bed with James Hewitt to serve as a theatrical take on their relationship.

Diana's theatrical counterpart will be played by Jeanna de Waal who starred in the plays including Wicked, Kinky Boots, and Finding Neverland. She will be joined by Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles and Erin Davie as Camilla Parker-Bowles.
